What Is The Rings Of Power About?

The Rings of Power is a TV series in J. R. R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings universe, set 1,000 years before the events of Tolkien’s novels The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, and based on the author’s history of Middle-earth, using appendices from The Lord of the Rings.

The series begins during a time of peace, and depicts some of the major events in Middle-earth’s Second Age, including the forging of the titular Rings of Power, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, the fall of the island kingdom of Númenor, and the final alliance between Elves and Men. In Tolkien’s work, these events transpire over thousands of years – but the timeline has been condensed for the series.

Season 1 Recap

The first season of The Rings of Power delved into the rise of evil in Middle-earth, introducing us to a plethora of new characters and locations and showcasing the beginning of the creation of the titular Rings of Power in the season finale. In this moment, we see Celebrimbor using the knowledge given by Halbrand beginning the process, with assistance from Elrond. However, we also learn that Halbrand is actually Sauron in disguise, and a volcanic eruption triggered by Adar and his orcs transforms the Southlands into Mordor, foreshadowing Sauron’s rise to domination. The villain returns to Mordor, leaving Galadriel and the elves to deal with the aftermath of their unknowing role in his rise.

Meanwhile, Nori and the Stranger set off on a journey to discover more about his origins and powers, with a hint that he is one of the Istari like Gandalf. Over in the island of Númenor, the kingdom’s fate hangs in the balance as internal and external pressures mount.

What Will Happen In Season 2?

Season 2 will showcase Sauron’s rise as he strives to consolidate power in Mordor, while Galadriel will struggle with the guilt of accidentally helping him get to his powerful position. We will also likely see more Rings of Power being created, while the fate of Númenor will edge closer to its downfall. Meanwhile, Nori will continue his journey with the Stranger in his quest to understand more about himself.
