How to nail a long bob

Just when we thought we’d run out of bob trends, another head-turning cut crops up – and, ultimately, takes over the internet. This one’s for the long bob girlies – those who are growing out their bobs, or simply can’t face a shorter chop – here’s how to master the outgrown bob look.

15 Bob Haircuts & Styles To Try In 2024

What Is An Outgrown Bob?

‘Just like the name suggests, an outgrown bob is a traditional bob shape with a slightly longer, grown-out length,’ explains Sarah McKenna, founder of The London Hair Lab. ‘It’s a great transitional hairstyle. It’s versatile and has the appeal of a bob while still allowing you to style your hair in low buns and ponytails; it can also be a great step if you are thinking of going shorter in the future.’

With the booming popularity of bob haircuts at an all time high, it was only a matter of time before long, between-haircuts versions of the trend started to make an appearance on the trend circuit. TikTok has especially become a hub of activity when it comes to styling advice for outgrown bobs, with posts tagged #growingoutbobhaircut surpassing 33 million posts on the platform.

It’s also proving a hit with celebrities who braved the chop last year, as many of them begin the process of growing out their bobs in style. ‘Maya Jama has recently been seen sporting the outgrown bob,’ says Sarah. ‘Her hairstylist created a voluminous look which is the perfect middle ground between long and short.’

How To Ask For This Style In The Salon (& What To Expect)

Ahead of your hair appointment, it’s worth doing a bit of research to figure out which styles you are most drawn to; this will help your stylist narrow down your vision into an achievable cut. ‘Prepare some photos of cuts you like so your stylist can see the look you are aiming for,’ says Sarah. ‘Depending on the length you currently have, you might only need a small trim to create this look. If you have longer lengths, you might need a dramatic chop to achieve the above-shoulder style (the outgrown bob should sit just above your collarbone).

‘Your stylists will cut the outgrown bob shape, and this will involve cutting your hair to a specific length and angle to achieve the look,’ she continues. ‘If you want to add texture, your stylist might add feathering to your hair to create soft blended layers. Once the style is complete, your stylist will enhance the shape and texture. To finish, they’ll likely blow dry your hair with a round brush to help add volume and smooth everything out.’

How To Style An Outgrown Bob

The best thing about an outgrown bob, according to Sarah, it the depth of movement it has – which makes it pretty low maintenance when it comes to styling. ‘You can easily get volume and movement out of the outgrown bob,’ she says. ‘Simply use a texturizing spray to achieve instant long-lasting texture, and you’re good to go.’

5 Outgrown Bob Ideas To Try Now

1. Side Part

It might have been a cause for debate amongst Gen Z not too long ago, but it looks like the side part is back in business as of 2024 – and it looks great with an outgrown bob. ‘Part your hair with a side parting, to add a chic touch to your look,’ says Sarah. ‘Tuck your hair behind your ear on the side with less hair, this will help keep your hair out of your face and accentuate your parting. Finish off your look by applying a light mist of hairspray to keep it in place.’

2. With Bangs

Looking for a little more framing around the face? Then you might want to consider bangs. ‘Add a fringe,’ recommends Sarah. ‘Having an outgrown bob with bangs is a chic and versatile hairstyle that suits many face shapes.’

3. Textured Waves

For a more relaxed look, Sarah recommends textured waves. ‘If you don’t have naturally wavy hair, you can use a straightener to create loose beachy waves,’ she says. ‘This will create an effortless style that’s great for everyday wear.’

4. Sleek & Straight

If you want to maximise the length of your hair, then you can opt for a super straight style. Sarah shares how you can get the look: ‘For a sleek and polished look, straighten your outgrown bob and apply a heat protectant spray to tame frizz and achieve a glossy finish.’

5. Curls On Curls

As mentioned, an outgrown bob is perfect for showcasing texture and volume – and the same principles apply whether you have curly or straight hair. We love how curls can be built into a loose halo with this hairstyle, with lots of emphasis on their natural flow.
