Photographer Jon Nicholson boasts a career spanning 35 years. In this time he’s been a Formula One photographer and has travelled around the world extensively, documenting intruiging aspects of life and bringing them to various galleries and exhibitions, giving us the chance to get a behind the scenes glimpse into global issues that may not be publicised. His upcoming exhibition is hosted at Augustus Brandt in Petworth, an impressive venue and showroom set inside the grand Grade II listed Newlands House. The images on show will take the viewer on a journey to some of the places Nicholson has been exploring. From far away lands to unique characters and rare sporting experiences, each image brings the depicted situation to life in astonishing 4D. In over 100 peices of art, visitors will see first hand how photography can be an emotive, raw form of storytelling that can captivate and inspire at a first glance.
Nicholson is renowned in his industry for his devotional relentlessness when it comes to taking an image. So clearly knowing the story he wants to tell, Nicholson shares his experiences with no prior judgement and no context, leaving it up to the imagination of the viewer of the photograph to wonder. Looking at his work, it’s clear to see how he has connected with the subject and place, making the viewing experience a deepy emotive one. To give a flavour of what to expect, here’s a highlight of the exhibition: an image taken in 1994 of the legendary Formula One driver Ayrton Senna in Imola. At the time, Nicholson was known as ‘the man for behind the scenes’. This image was one of the very last taken of the driver and has been hidden from public view for 24 years, because of the fact the opening weekend of the Imola Formula One was so gory – deaths, crashes and casualties occured. However, the image is resurfacing to mark the 25th anniversary of Senna’s death.
