Top 5 School Summer Adventures
King’s Ely Adventurous Students
Bouldering, ridge walking and trail running were just some of the activities enjoyed by intrepid King’s Ely students during an adrenaline-fuelled school summer adventure to the Lake District.
The 10-day action-packed expedition, which kicked off on the first Sunday of the summer holidays, also presented the King’s Ely Senior students with the opportunity to enjoy multi pitch mountain climbing, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, plunge pool swimming and more.
The expedition was staged through the Ely Scheme, which offers boundless opportunities for students to explore and learn through outdoor education. While most independent schools have an outdoor pursuits programme, the Ely Scheme is both unique and central to the whole King’s Ely experience, as young people from Year 9 upwards are given tangible opportunities to push themselves to achieve beyond anything they ever thought possible.
The aim is to develop each individual student through outdoor education and adventurous activity, concentrating on eight major elements: personal skills; self-confidence; teamwork; leadership skills; social and environmental awareness; problem solving; ability to cope with difficult situations and healthy respect for nature and the outdoors.

Ex-GB and England hockey player, Zoe Shipperley, inspires girls at St Mary’s Sports Awards
Have trust and confidence in your own ability and be the best version of yourself you can be, was the message to students of St Mary’s School, Colchester, when Ex-GB and England hockey player, Zoe Shipperley, spoke at the school’s annual Sports Awards Evening on 10 July.
Zoe, who represented GB and England 58 times, gave an inspiring and humorous speech about the highs and lows on her journey and the lessons she learnt along the way.
‘If there is one key message I could give all of you, whether you relate it to sport, a favourite subject or hobby, it’s don’t compare yourself to others. Be the best model of yourself,’ she told girls aged nine to 15 at the event. ‘Work hard to improve your weakness but never forget what you are good at and keep remembering to practice that as well.’ The ceremony recognised the year’s sporting success of teams and individuals at the school.
The coaches of the school’s sports teams and year groups gave a round-up of the year’s sporting events, and awards were presented to students for achievement in competitions and fixtures as well as PE lessons. The categories including Team Spirit, Players’ Player, Team of the Year and Sports Personality of the Year.
