New restaurants pop up all the time in the capital – but which ones are worth shouting about? Here we bring you the lowdown on the culinary openings you need on your radar for 2023. Coming this November: a new Wolseley, an oyster bar from Tom Brown and a Highbury hotspot called Saltine.

Cafe Kitty

There was a big hype around Soho favourite Kitty Fisher’s when it opened back in 2015 – and a similar buzz around its sister restaurant, Cora Pearl in Covent Garden. This November, the group is in the spotlight once again, launching Cafe Kitty on the first floor of Soho theatre Underbelly Boulevard. Described as the ‘cool little sister’ of Kitty Fisher’s, it will, naturally, be a great spot for pre- and post-show dining, but a foodie destination in itself too. The opening menu will include dishes like mushroom thermidor, Welsh rarebit, leek and chestnut pithivier, and curried monkfish with samphire and crispy shallots.

Ixchel

Ixchel

Coming to the King’s Road this November is Ixchel, a Mexican restaurant and tequila bar from esteemed chef Ximena Gayosso Gonzalez, whose CV includes Brat and Madera at Treehouse London. Named after the Mayan goddess of the moon and textiles, Ixchel will bring the flavours of Mexico to Chelsea, focusing on twists of traditional plates of ceviche, tacos and tostadas. The menu features sharing-style starters of sauteed prawn quesadillas, tuna sashimi with ponzu sauce, and slow cooked baby pork ribs on banana leaf, ahead of larger meat and veggie platters made on the robata grill. There’s also a tequila bar which has one of Europe’s largest agave-based liquor collections in Europe, serving an eclectic cocktail menu from ex La Bodega Negra-bartender Manuel Lema. Also set to be a highlight are the colourful interiors, with vibrant murals, terracotta tables, hand-woven artworks and foliage dotted around.

The Wolseley City

Easily one of the capital’s most famous restaurants, The Wolseley has stood proudly on Piccadilly since 2003, attracting a constant stream of famous faces over the years. Will its new City offspring garner the same critical acclaim? We’ll soon find out: the sister restaurant opens on 8 November 2023 – tying in with the 20th anniversary of the original. Located just around the corner from Monument Square, The Wolseley City will feature design similarities to the Piccadilly stalwart, with Baroque ironwork and a reimagination of the famed horseshoe banquette. Menus, too, will be similar, with all the breakfast classics (kedgeree with poached eggs, sausage and egg hash browns) alongside an all-day menu that includes everything from steak tartare to fruits de mer platters.

Dear Jackie

The West End is getting a new hotel this month: Broadwick Soho, perched on the corner of Broadwick and Berwick Street. It’s being helmed by Noel Hayden, who grew up living at his family’s hotel, Mon Ami, in Bournemouth – owned by his mother Jackie, who was the inspiration for its restaurant, Dear Jackie. An Italian eatery in a glamorous setting, it will open exclusively for dinner each day, with a menu curated by head chef Harry Faddy, who has worked at acclaimed London eateries including The River Cafe and Aquavit London. Top-quality pasta will be the focus, alongside an impressive Italian wine list which includes both internationally recognised regions and small boutique producers.

Saltine

Saltine

North London residents will know Fink’s, a collection of coffee shops created by Mat Appleton and Jess Blackstone. Now, the pair are turning their attention to a standalone restaurant, Saltine, opening in Highbury this November. Chef Phil Wood – who helms from the prestigious St John – has been brought into head up the food side, with opening dishes set to include fried stracciatella and anchovy sandwiches, cured bream with fennel seed saltine, and pigeon with corn and miso butter.
