The second restaurant from the Prawn on the Lawn team is making a comeback

Planning a summer sojourn to Cornwall this year? Be sure to pay a visit to Barnaby’s, which is returning to Padstow this May – the second pop-up eatery from the team behind Prawn on the Lawn.

Opening in the family-run Trevibban Mill Vineyard and Orchard, the 45-cover restaurant will continue the group’s farm-to-fork, local and seasonal ethos. The menu will still focus on day-boat fish and seafood from the Cornish coast, but this year it will also be introducing some locally sourced meat and vegetable dishes. The menu will be inspired by Mediterranean cuisine, incorporating herbs and wildflowers grown on the vineyard.

Some Barnaby’s classics will be returning, such as BBQ mackerel and marinated slow-cooked lamb, alongside some new sharing plates: think tempura courgette flower with ricotta, and Newlyn cod with artichoke hummus. All this is to be enjoyed alongside wines and ciders from Trevibban Mill.

The kitchen will be headed up by Prawn on the Lawn Padstow’s current head chef Eddie Thompson, who will work closely with executive chef/owner Rick Toogood.

This means it will be a fallow year for Prawn on the Farm, the seafood pop-up which has run each summer at Trerethern Farm since 2020. The group’s permanent Cornish restaurant, Prawn on the Lawn Padstow, will remain open, helmed by chef James Lean, who has experience cooking under fish maestro Nathan Outlaw.

Husband-and-wife duo Katie and Rick Toogood opened the first Barnaby’s in Padstow in 2018 – this one on Duke Street. Their other restaurant, Prawn on the Lawn, began its life as a fishmonger in London’s Islington with just eight seats, but it quickly gained popularity and moved to a bigger site down the road. Two years later, in 2015, the duo opened a second outpost in Padstow – a natural home for the seafood hotspot.

Barnaby’s will be open Wednesday through to Saturday in the month of May and on Tuesday through Saturday from June until October. Bookings are open now at prawnonthelawn.com.
