Move aside choir and gymnastics, after school clubs just got a lot cooler
Parsons Green Prep are burgeoning a new era of after school activities.
A recent poll undertaken by the Sutton Trust found that a massive 76% of parents reported that their child was involved in some form of regular, extracurricular activity.
The most popular activity was sport or exercise (52%), followed by Scouts or Guiding (16%), dance or drama (15%) and music (14%).
Meanwhile, at Parsons Green Prep, they’re trailblazing a new era of extracurricular activity, offering many different after-school clubs to enrich the lives of the children at the school and help with their personal development.
The ultimate aim is to enhance the formal curriculum and offer opportunities for children to develop new skills and attitudes that will help shape their character and values in years to come. We take a look at five of their best.
Creative Coders
In a world of ever-advancing technology, coding is becoming an important language that allows students to become confident digital citizens. This club lets children explore coding languages, such as Python and JavaScript and use these to navigate new worlds or design and create their own.
Young Scientists
This is a fun, creative and energetic STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) group. Recent activities have included designing and building a Formula 1 racing car, debugging programs on the computers and building 3D skyscrapers using marshmallows and spaghetti.
Needless to say, it is rumoured that most of the marshmallow structures did not survive the session.
e2 Young Engineers’ Lego club
This club makes STEM tangible and playful. The children build motorised Lego models such as a steamroller or a windmill, which show principles like kinetic/potential/elastic energy, different kinds of transmission, and centrifugal/centripetal force, in moving action.
StageKool
This club teaches confidence and coordination using performance skills, improvisation and drama games whilst having huge amounts of fun. Every child is a star and gets the chance to play a role in various scenes and musical numbers, no matter what their experience or ability.
Each week pupils learn songs and dance along with scripts and scenes from plays and musicals, giving them a chance to develop performance skills and characterisation.
Yoga Express
Yoga is excellent for mindfulness and mental wellbeing and it is helping to teach children to look after themselves in preparation for an increasingly complex and pressurised world.
The school’s Yoga Express club teaches a variety of poses based on animals and nature. Each class has a theme as the children put together imaginative sequences to explore movement in yoga practice.
