St Andrew’s Sleep Out For World Homeless Day

On Friday 7 October, St Andrew’s Respect Inclusion Diversity & Equality (R.I.D.E) Committee spent the night sleeping outside on cardboard boxes to raise funds for Launchpad.

Coinciding with World Homeless Day, the pupil-led group raised £1,295 for Reading’s leading homelessness prevention charity, who provide support for those without a stable place to live or are at risk of losing their home.

The twenty Year 8 children who took part in the evening, forwent comfort for cardboard boxes, and were only allowed a basic evening meal.

Head of R.I.D.E., Teacher, and Mental Health Lead, Haig Howard said: ‘Although all of us were aware this was ‘just for one night’, it gave pupils and Staff a small glimpse of some of the hardships that vulnerable people, including children, face on the streets every day.’

First to rise just before 6.30 am on Saturday morning was Year 8 pupil and R.I.D.E. member, Josh, who said: ‘I can’t believe people have to do this every day.’

Fundraising Manager at Launchpad, Reading, Vicki Lewis commented: ‘Your efforts in helping us raise awareness and vital funds is very much appreciated and we couldn’t be more grateful.

As the cost of living rises over the coming months, we know our vital services will be a lifeline to many local people in need. With your help, we can continue our vital work with vulnerable individuals, couples and families in Reading and ensure they remain housed.’
