Which Vineyards Have Been Crowned Best In The World?

Whether you’re an oenophile or simply enjoy a glass of Pinot, a trip to a vineyard is always a treat. But where will you find the world’s finest? The results are in from this year’s World’s Best Vineyards awards, highlighting the top wine destinations for 2023. 

The World’s 50 Best Vineyards Have Been Revealed

Argentina did well in this year’s list, with the family-run Catena Zapata in Mendoza winning first place – started in 1902 to create Malbec wine. Two other Argentinian wineries also featured in the top ten. In second place was Rioja’s Bodegas de los Herederos del Marqués de Riscal, which is renowned for its futuristic architecture and unique setting, followed by a Chilean vineyard called VIK.

Europe put on a strong showing too, with 23 vineyards named in the list. France had nine vineyards in the top 50, including world-famous Champagne houses such as Maison Ruinart, Bollinger, Billecart-Salmon and Veuve Clicquot. Newbies from Hungary, Georgia and Lebanon also made it onto the list – but sadly no English vineyards won awards (there’s always next year).

The awards ceremony took place on 12 July in Rioja, Spain. Organised by UK-based media group William Reed, the list is compiled using all the nominations by the global academy of voters – a mix of wine lovers, sommeliers and tourism experts. Judging factors include the quality of the wine, of course, but also the estate experience – how tours and tastings are done, for example, and the general aesthetic and ambience for visitors.
