Check out the star-studded list of winners
Christopher Nolan’s unlikely hit, Oppenheimer, swept the Golden Globe awards last night, while HBO’s Succession won big in TV categories. Meanwhile, Greta Gerwig’s box office smash Barbie achieved what we’re describing as a participation award. Here’s the breakdown of all the winners at the Golden Globes 2024.
All The Winners At The Golden Globes 2024
The awards have been announced and the memes are flooding in: The Golden Globes 2024 took place last night, and here’s who won big. While Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner were caught canoodling on camera (sending lip-reading afficionados into overdrive), Christopher Nolan’s nuclear bomb biopic Oppenheimer bagged five awards, including the night’s top prize, Best Picture. Acknowledging the film’s unlikely achievements at the box office, Robert Downey Jr – while accepting his award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of US government official Lewis Strauss – said: ‘A sweeping story about the ethical dilemma of nuclear weapons grosses $1bn?’
Over in TV land, Succession swept the board, bagging Best Television Series – Drama, Best Performance in a Television Series for both Actor (Kieran Culkin) and Actress (Sarah Snook), plus Best Supporting Performance in a Series for Matthew Macfayden’s portrayal of the ‘human grease stain that is Tom Wambsgans,’ as he joked in his acceptance speech.
Meanwhile, despite frontrunning the nominations with nine mentions, Greta Gerwig’s box office hit, Barbie – which earned the Mattel doll consideration for Time’s Person of the Year, created the word of the moment, ‘Kenough’, spurred a mass array of product collaborations, generated an album that broke UK chart records, and was generally the undisputed top trend trend of 2023 – was only commended with the brand new ‘Cinematic and Box Office Achievement’ award, a special category for films that grossed at least $100 million domestically and $150 million worldwide. Was it created just for Barbie? The jury is out – but it was notably announced in late September 2023, after the film’s global impact was already becoming clear. Critics have a called it a heavy-handed ploy for relevance, and we’re tempted to agree.
