It’s far from over for Tommy
It’s been more than two years since the sixth and final season of Peaky Blinders aired on the BBC, but the story isn’t over yet: Netflix has acquired the rights for a spin-off movie, and the show’s writer, Steven Knight, has revealed some coveted details. Plus, a fellow Irishman will be joining Murphy on screen. Here’s what we know.
The Peaky Blinders Film: Plot, Cast, Release Date
The very last episode of Peaky Blinders aired on the BBC in 2022 and, as with any brilliant TV show, fans were saddened to see the end. The good news, then, is that a film is coming soon. And, though many of the details are still under wraps, there’s plenty to get excited about.
Netflix Has Acquired The Rights
Taking to X to relay the news, Netflix declared: ‘Tommy Shelby returns. A Peaky Blinders Film starring Cillian Murphy is coming to Netflix.’
‘It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me…’ Murphy commented. ‘It is very gratifying to be recollaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans.’

‘When I first directed Peaky Blinders over 10 years ago, we didn’t know what the series would become, but we did know that there was something in the alchemy of the cast and the writing that felt explosive,’ Tom Harper added. ‘Peaky has always been a story about family – and so it’s incredibly exciting to be reuniting with Steve and Cillian to bring the movie to audiences across the world on Netflix.’
It Will Star Some Hollywood Heavyweights
There are three stars on the cast sheet so far: Cillian Murphy (of course), fellow Irishman Barry Keoghan, and Rebecca Ferguson.
Before Steven Knight graced us with the brilliant news that this was the case – telling Birmingham World earlier this year that the Oppenheimer star ‘definitely is returning’ for the film – we could never be sure whether Murphy would step back into the role of Tommy Shelby. However, he is in fact co-producing the film, alongside Knight, Caryn Mandabach and Guy Heeley.
The Plot Is Being Kept Under Wraps
This is one thing that we’re not entirely certain of yet, but we know we’ll be back on the lawless streets of Birmingham and that it will be pretty fiery. ‘It will be an explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story,’ writer Knight teased. ‘No holds barred. Full on Peaky Blinders at war.’
Knight also confirmed the events of the film will be backdropped by World War II. Fans originally believed the TV series would end in 1939, with the first air raid siren going off in Birmingham; since that didn’t end up happening, perhaps it’ll be the starting point for the film instead.
Release Date
There’s no official release date just yet; Knight also revealed that the film will start shooting in Digbeth, Birmingham, in September this year, but it might be a while until it arrives on our screens. Check back here for updates.
Where Is It Streaming?
Once it has been released, the Peaky Blinders film will stream on Netflix.
Made in association with BBC Film, there’s also potential for it to stream on BBC iPlayer.
Will There Be Other Peaky Blinders Spinoffs?
There are rumours about both a spinoff TV series and a prequel; according to a Bloomberg report in December 2023, one series would take place in Boston a few decades after the original show ends, while the other would concentrate on the life of Polly, the matriarch of the Shelby family. We don’t have many details about these shows, either – but it you’re looking for a Peaky spinoff that isn’t shrouded in mystery, the Peaky Blinders ballet premiered in Birmingham 2022 and is still showing in theatres around the country (with a filmed performance on the way, too).
