Lord’s Restaurant

Opened in Greenwich Village in 2022, Lord’s is the second venture from the team behind wildly popular seafood restaurant Dame. Spearheaded by British chef Ed Szymanski and Texan co-owner Patricia Howard, the restaurant is a meat-centric eatery, focusing on British classics with a twist. There’s curried lamb scotch egg, for instance, plus oysters kilpatrick and Welsh rarebit with anchovies. Mains showcase the eatery’s nose-to-tail ethos – which was partly inspired by Fergus Henderson, founder of famed British restaurant St. JOHN – with dishes like crispy pig’s head with chicory remoulade, veal sweetbreads with carrots and marmite, and duck pie with hen of the woods. Whatever you get, be sure to add a helping of ‘proper English chips’ on the side. The wine list is more international, but there are a few English sparklings in the mix too, alongside some English pale ales.

The Churchill Tavern

Aiming to replicate the experience on the other side of the pond is The Churchill Tavern, a pub-style bar and restaurant in New York. Come here on a Sunday for a proper English roast: choose between roast chicken, lamb, pork, beef or a Portobello mushroom veggie option, all served with crispy potatoes, Yorkshire puds, veggies and gravy. Jones Wood Foundry

This long-standing favourite is the brainchild of Stratford upon Avon-born chef Jason Hicks, who decided to bring a slice of his home country to the Upper East Side. The venue aims to recreate the cosy, convivial atmosphere of British pubs, with homely interiors and an authentic Fullers Brewery sign. On the menu you’ll find an array of British-inspired dishes: bangers and mash, pies, and of course a roast, served on Saturdays and Sundays – plus plenty of draft beer, naturally. Everything is made using local ingredients, with a secret courtyard garden perfect for the summer months.

Gordon Ramsay’s Fish and Chips

Gordon Ramsay is bringing a taste of the British seaside to the Big Apple with a new outpost of his popular restaurant, Gordon Ramsay Fish & Chips – which you can also find in Las Vegas, Orlando and Washington. The New York branch is found bang in the middle of Times Square, focusing on the eponymous fish and chips, a dish Ramsay has spent many years mastering. Cod is sustainably sourced and chips are made from potatoes from America’s Pacific Northwest, which are tossed in sea salt – with the option to make them ‘Dirty’ with truffle, bacon and the like. Alongside the cod, there’s shrimp or chicken coated in the same crispy batter style – all served within a portable box, instead of newspaper.

The aforementioned Dame is another of New York’s best British restaurants, this one focusing on seafood. Since transitioning from pop-up to permanent restaurant in the summer of 2021, it has been a hugely popular spot, with table reservations getting snapped up within minutes of being released. While New York is jam-packed with great fish eateries, Dame offers something unique: Szymanski channels his English roots with dishes like kedgeree rice with grilled monkfish, poached cod with lentils, fish pie and grilled oysters with hollandaise sauce. Be sure to save some space for the sticky toffee pud – and in the warmer months, kick things off with a ‘proper Pimm’s cup’.
