What the style set will be wearing come September

The trend mill never stops – especially not in fashion – and with the change in seasons just around the corner we’re eager to forecast what’s next for our wardrobes. After scouring the shows and re-examining the runway, we’ve come to the conclusion that these will be the biggest trends for AW24.

The Biggest Fashion Trends For AW24

We’re calling it: the era of quiet luxury is well and truly over. The runway this season was full of fun, maximalist expression, ranging from print clashing and shade saturation to theatrical silhouettes and playful textures. Want to know more? These are the AW24 trends to make a note of:

Trends At A Glance

  1. Leopard Print
  2. Padded Hips
  3. Ticklish Textures
  4. Zesty Orange
  5. Horse Girl Aesthetic
  6. Lace Tights
  7. Opera Gloves
  8. Sheer Florals
  9. Quicksilver
  10. Green Light

1. Leopard Print

It’s official, mob wife aesthetic is here to stay – or at least, it’s signature print is. From dresses to jumpers to scarves to shoes, leopard spots were everywhere on the AW24 runway. Signalling a (loud) departure from quiet luxury, this trend seems to be all about maximalist impact; think all-over prints, big puff sleeves and sculptural skirts. This is one for the unapologetically loud dressers, who like to bring an element of playfulness to their wardrobe.

2. Padded Hips

A slightly more surprising (but no less welcomed) trend on the runway this season was sculptural skirt silhouettes – or ‘padded hips’. Now, we’re not talking about the kind of padding that creatures sumptuous curves; think more along the lines of the dramatic, flared hips created by using crinolines, cages and petticoats. From long, Tudor-style gowns to puffed-up mini dresses to sculptural new takes on the peplum, the silhouette of choice this season is about as theatrical as it gets.

3. Ticklish Textures

Playfulness in all shapes and styles was also key to several AW24 trends – especially in the context of texture. Designers were a lot bolder when playing with textures this season, building them out into large, sculptural forms. The most extreme cases came as large overcoats made from grass, large knitted loops and hair (yes, really). Although it might not seem the most wearable at a glance, we can see this approach to textural adornment to trickle down into mainstream fashion on a a pared back scale. Maybe an oversized knit, or a statement jacket?

4. Zesty Orange

Making our way around the colour wheel, we’re saying a tentative ‘bye bye’ to red in favour of its (slightly) milder cousin orange. One of the burgeoning statement shades of the season – it is autumn, after all – designers seem to be going one step further with the trend by introducing more texture to add depth to the palette. Fringe, velvet, metallics, embroidery and quilting were all used on the runway to make shades of orange pop, and bring a seasonal warmth to the fashion landscape.

5. Horse Girl Aesthetic

Now, we think Beyoncé might have something to do with this one. While she hadn’t released Cowboy Carter to the masses when Fashion Week rolled around, the singer has been stoking the flames of the country fashion trend for a while now – and designers have taken notice. The great Wild West hit the runway hard this season, with everything from double denim, cowboy hats and boots to leather chaps and horse motifs making a grand appearance. Does this count as a country Renaissance?

6. Lace Tights

Bare legs are usually out of the question come winter, but designers have been busily working to push passed fears of cold (and pale) pins for AW24. The solution? Lace tights. A leftover style note from 2023’s gothic revival, this new take on the trend sees lace tights in a range of shades (the most popular being red, black and white) and patterns darned in various sizes – from dainty, evenly spaces florals to large swooping vines and blossoms.

7. Opera Gloves

Speaking of theatricality, this season signals a return of the opera glove. Did it ever leave the fashion circuit? Some would say ‘no’, but it’s certainly a much louder accessory when it comes to AW24. Designers really branched out with their approach to the classic opera glove, experimenting with new colours, materials – from shiny leather to Bridgerton-esque organza – and silhouettes to really make them a statement accessory. We’re talking everything from balloon sleeves to arm warmers, and everything in between.

8. Sheer Florals

We’ve seen time and again that florals are, indeed, not just for spring – and, to prove a point, AW24 designers have done us one better by combining them with one of the season’s most consistent recurring trends: sheer silhouettes. Moody florals take on a sexier appeal with strategically placed blooms on otherwise transparent fabrics, teamed up with glittering sequins and luxurious silks for a fun and playful look. Come party season, this AW24 trend will be high in demand.

9. Quicksilver

Metallics are yet another returning trend for AW24 – with silver once again leading the movement. But where SS24 looked more closely at wearable sparkle and sequins, this season designers settle back into the silver partywear circuit. And this time there’s a new emphasis on mini dresses and high-texture tailoring; think ‘tin foil’ suits, chain mail dresses and sequin-clad co-ords.

10. Green Light

Did somebody say Brat Green? While Charli XCX might be taking the colour to neon heights this summer, designers are giving green the go-ahead whole-heartedly this season. Whether neon, pastel, mint or forest, green is this season’s go-to shade staple. It makes sense though; sitting opposite red on the colour wheel, it’s a natural progression from last season’s trendiest shade. We expect to see more splashes of green take over the runway as the year progresses.
