This colouring technique screams 'quiet luxury'

Fancy a change, but not quite ready to commit to all-over colour? Then you’ll want the money piece hair treatment. This trendy colouring technique is all the rage online, and contains all your colouring experimentation to a few strands. Curious? Here’s everything you need to know.

What Is The Money Piece Hair Trend?

‘Money piece hair is a style that features a stand-out bright piece of colouring, usually around the face,’ explains Charlie Ray Hamill, a stylist at Blue Tit Portobello. ‘That brightness is the “money piece”, and it’s usually a shade of blonde or very light brown.’

While it might sound like a clash of shades, this colouring technique has picked up speed on TikTok. You’ll find over 133.2 million posts tagged under #hairmoneypiece, with creators showing off their dyed locks with an expertly styled do. ‘It is a popular trend at the moment,’ confirms Charlie. ‘People can have a fun and bold change without changing their whole head of hair. This also makes it pretty cost effective. Minimum risk with maximum reward.’

And with the likes of BeyoncĂ©, Hayley Bieber and Jenifer Lopez all jumping on the trend bandwagon, it’s safe to say this is a hair fad we’re only going to see more of in the future.

Who Suits This Hairstyle?

Lucky for us, money piece hair is a super adaptable trend. ‘This is a style that can suit anyone,’ confirms Charlie. ‘It draws people in and adds a slight edge to the hair. It can also be bold or subtle to suit the client’s personality, so it really can work for anyone.’

How To Ask For Money Piece In The Salon (& What To Expect)

Charlie suggests bringing in some pictures and ideas that you can show your stylist. ‘I always think a reference photo is handy,’ he says. ‘Especially considering so many celebs have had a money piece, there will be loads of references out there. Otherwise you can just describe how bold or natural you want the money piece and that will be helpful to the stylist.’

As for the creation of this look, Charlie tells us that the execution might differ between salons – but the general result, with lighter layers around the front, should stay the same. ‘I’m sure different stylists will have their own techniques,’ he says. ‘Personally I like to use back-to-back sliced sections in foils to ensure lift and visibility.’

@angelinamurillo3 How to creat the perfect money piece I think it’s safe to say everyone’s hair is so different and a money piece can be done in so many different ways but because of her fine temple area with her hair being a little finer, I like to stretch back her money piece a little further, this time to really create a skinny money peace with achieving boldness through the mid to end How you enjoy #blonde #blondehair #summerlinelasvegas #blondebalayage #balayage #handpanting #lvhairstylist #keepingupwithangiemurillo #dimensionalblonde #hair #moneypiece #stylisttutorial #hairtutorial ♬ Warm Nights – LAKEY INSPIRED

How To Style Money Piece Hair

There aren’t really any rules when it comes to styling money piece hair, so you have more room to experiment. Although it’s recommended that you opt for something shows off the bright flash of colour. ‘A money piece is usually positioned around the face and looks beautiful styled in a beachy or loose wave,’ suggest Charlie. ‘Curling the hair away from the face is also flattering, as you can show off the colour more.’

What Next?

A change in colour, perhaps? ‘At the moment, it’s common for a money piece to be created in variations of blonde,’ says Charlie. ‘I think more people are starting to be experimental with their hair and the money piece can be used for bright colours too. Think pops of bright colour around the face. Alternatively, I can see multiple money pieces placed all around the head, so not only at the front but also underneath. It could evolve that way.’
