Growing out a bob just got easier

While bobs are still on a high this season, we’ve noticed a growing shift towards grown-out, lob-like strands. The latest take on the trend? The collarbone cut.

What Is A Collarbone Cut?

‘A collarbone cut is essentially a haircut that ends, or sits, at your collarbone,’ explains hairstylist Sam McKnight, MBE. Like the lob, the collarbone cut is a softer ‘in-between’ hairstyle that offers a shorter cut without the dramatic shearing of a bob.

In fact, it’s the knock-on impact of the bob – and the next steps of growing it out – that McKnight pins the collarbone cut’s growing popularity on. ‘Bobs have been having their moment over the past year or two, and this length is a great progression for some who might not want to commit to shorter lengths or those who are growing one out,’ he says. ‘It’s flattering and has great style versatility.’

And with 17.6 million posts listed under the #collarboneslengthhaircut tag on TikTok, it’s safe to say that the internet is fully onboard with the trend.

Who Suits This Haircut?

Considering its versatility, we can expect the collarbone cut to work for anyone – depending on how it’s cut and styled. ‘This is really down to the individual and their hairstylist,’ adds McKnight. ‘If someone has fine hair then keeping it fairly blunt will help the hair appear thicker, whereas someone with thick hair might need some of the weight taken out so it doesn’t end up triangular. A great hairstylist can find the right attributes to suit you and personalise the cut for your texture, type, face shape and lifestyle.’

How To Ask For A Collarbone Cut In The Salon

‘Whenever you are looking to change up your hairstyle, a great thing to do is to bring some inspiration with you,’ recommends McKnight. ‘Be specific about what you like about the haircut and anything you don’t. Be honest in what you are prepared to do styling-wise at home, as it influences how your hairstylist cuts your new do.’

How To Style A Collarbone Cut

When it comes to styling this hairstyle, creating volume is key. ‘As this cut sits on your body, it can create width along the baseline,’ says McKnight. ‘So focus volume at the roots rather than the mid lengths and ends, or else it could appear quite triangular.’

How To Maintain A Collarbone Cut

Despite not being a full bob, to keep this style in good condition you’ll still need to get regular trims. ‘To maintain the length, you’ll want to trim it every eight to 10 weeks,’ recommends McKnight. ‘But it has to be said that this cut looks great as it’s growing out too.’

What Next?

While he doesn’t see much change in the length itself, McKnight can imagine the collarbone cut evolving in style. ‘Some 60s inspired choppy layers, especially framing the face. would be a great progression,’ he says.
