‘An undercut pixie bob is essentially the shortest of bobs with an undercut at the back – although it keeps a soft length around the ears and face,’ explains Anna Wiig, hairstylist, colourist and founder of wiig. ‘By having the undercut at the back, the feels like more of a hairstyle, rather than a cut. It can also give more body and fullness at the crown.’

With both bobs and pixies having a huge moment in 2024, it makes sense for the two to come together in an edgy, throwback cut. Takings its cues from the 90s iteration of the look, this new pixie bob is all about soft grunge. And, with 15.6 million posts about the undercut pixie bob circulating on TikTok, it seems to be a hit with the next generation. ‘I feel that 90s styles are back,’ adds Anna. ‘Bobs are all the rage right now, so why not give the classic look a nostalgic twist?’

‘Most hair types and face shapes can actually suit this style,’ says Anna. Although the stylist adds that it may benefit fine hair the most. ‘For those with finer hair, if styled correctly, this cut can bring a lot of shapes.’
How To Ask For An Undercut Pixie Bob In The Salon
Before heading to the salon, Anna suggests doing your research and having a clear idea of what you want with this cut. ‘I’d say be prepared for how extreme this style can feel at the back,’ she warns. ‘If you’re new to the style, then make sure you’re clear about how short or extreme you would like the back to be, as well as the desired length you would like through the rest. It’s very important to have an idea of the length you have in mind. As always, a photo is always a good way to show this.’
How To Style An Undercut Pixie Bob
‘Nobody wants a flat pixie cut,’ says Anna. ‘And for this style, body is key. You can opt to use various styling products; try using mouse, volume or texture spray and ending with a hairspray to lock it in place.’

How To Maintain An Undercut Pixie Bob
As with most short hairstyles, you might need a little more maintenance than usual with an undercut pixie bob. ‘This style needs regular trims to keep it looking perfect,’ confirms Anna. ‘The back will grow out early, so I would say every five to six weeks.’
What Next?
As for the future of this cut, Anna sees it taking an even more avant-garde direction. ‘I can see it evolving into more of a round bowl cut-like shape, where fullness is key,’ she muses.
