5 Ways To Celebrate Black History Month In London 2024

Every October, Black History Month recognises the achievements, talent and impact of the African diaspora, remembering important people and events in our nation’s Black history. Originating in the US in 1926, the month-long celebration has been observed every year since 1987 here in the UK – although in October as opposed to February across the Atlantic (learn more about the history here). Here are five ways to get involved in London this year.

See (& Buy) Black Artists’ Work

At this year’s Battersea Autumn event, Affordable Art Fair will continue its tradition of celebrating Black History Month with a specially curated exhibition celebrating contemporary Black artists: ‘Reimagining Representation’. Highlighting an array of artistic voices and Black British artists in particular, visitors will find some of the most exciting artists of today, with vibrant works across a range of mediums by the likes of Ronald Mugabe, Dawn Beckles, Derrick Ofosu Boateng and Carol Muthiga-Oyekunle.

Visit London Museum Docklands

Black history is ingrained in the fabric of the British capital. Explore the legacy of London’s Black historical figures, changemakers and ordinary people at London Museum Docklands, with a whole line-up of insightful historical talks scheduled for Black History Month, exploring: the London, Sugar & Slavery display with an introductory talk (4pm on 12, 19 & 26 October); Windrush and the NHS with a talk from a nurse called Ruby (12 & 26 October); the voices of Phillis Wheatley, Ignatius Sancho, Olaudah Equiano, Mary Prince and other influential figures in ‘Words, actions and deeds’ (12.30pm on 19, 20 & 27 October); the hidden legacy of Black Tudors (weekends at 3.30pm from 6–26 October); and more.

Eat At A Black-Owned Restaurant

London’s food scene is world-class, with a burgeoning Black-owned restaurant scene spanning everything from street food to fine dining. Treat yourself to a Michelin-starred dinner at Chishuru, with head chef Adejoké Bakare being the first Black female chef in the UK to bag a star earlier this year. Or for something more low-key, head to Limin Southbank for delicious Caribbean food.

Attend A Talk

Kindred in Hammersmith is hosting a series of events for Black History Month, including an insightful talk hosted by pioneering musician Shumba Maasai, all about platforming African musicians and culture at the highest level.

Comedy Night
