The butterfly is back
2024’s bob mania isn’t over quite yet. And, as we head into winter, the trend is getting a icy upgrade. Meet the butterfly blonde bob, the fluttery hairstyle taking over salons this season.
What Is A Butterfly Blonde Bob?
A butterfly blonde bob is a combination of two hair trends: the butterfly bob and butterfly blonde. ‘The trending butterfly bob, as sported by the likes of Gigi Hadid, combined with a butterfly blonde colour is a beautiful, modern style that blends intricate cut details with a luminous, multifaceted array of blonde tones,’ explains Jason Collier, hairstylist and Jerome Russell Bblonde Key Opinion Leader.

And when the cut and colour come together, the look is meant to look light and airy – imitating the fluttering of butterfly wings. ‘The layered, textured shape of the butterfly bob is best enhanced by multi-dimensional colour,’ says Jason. ‘The lighter ends will catch the light, highlighting the fluttery layers, and giving hair a luminous, lightweight appearance.’
Let’s break down the trend:
The Butterfly Bob
Perhaps one of the trendiest short hairstyles of the year, the butterfly bob is an evolution of the longer butterfly haircut – which is characterised by the creation of feathered layers that fall around the face, imitating butterfly wings. And with over 316.6 million posts dedicated to the topic on TikTok, it’s safe to say the trend is still a popular one.
‘The butterfly bob is known for its soft, fluttery layers that mimic the delicacy and weightlessness of butterfly wings,’ highlights Jason. ‘The bob itself is typically shorter at the back, with slightly longer, face-framing layers at the front. It also has feathery layers throughout that add volume and movement. These layers create a dynamic shape, which makes hair appear light and textured, just like a butterfly in flight.’

Butterfly Blonde
And then there’s the butterfly blonde colour, which Jason notes, ‘complements the layered structure of the bob style. Starting with a warm, golden blonde at the roots, the base colour adds depth and richness, grounding the look.
‘As the bob moves through the mid-lengths, the shade typically transitions into a lighter honey blonde, adding more dimension to the cut,’ he continues. ‘Towards the ends, the blonde should shift into a bright, almost pearlescent platinum, creating a soft gradient effect. This gradual transition of blonde tones mirrors the intricate patterns of butterfly wings.’

How To Ask For A Butterfly Blonde Bob In The Salon
Start by asking your stylist for a lightweight butterfly bob. Then, when it comes to colour, ask for a gradient blonde technique – with gold at the roots and cooler tones at the ends. It’s also best to bring reference images for your stylist, so that they know what you’re after.
How To Style A Butterfly Blonde Bob
If you want the Gigi Hadid version of the trend, you’ll want to create some kind of soft wave. ‘To finish, style your butterfly blonde bob with loose waves or soft curls, emphasising the movement in both the cut and the colour,’ recommends Jason. ‘Waves will make the colour transitions more dynamic, highlighting the different shades of blonde and the airy, light structure of the cut.’
How To Maintain The Look
Regular trims every six to eight weeks will keep the bob element of this cut looking neat and polished. And at-home haircare (toners, treatments and nourishing shampoos) will help the blonde stay luminous until your next colour appointment.
