This year's top trends, straight from the salon

With December – aka, party season – just around the corner, we’re deep in planning mode. What should we wear? Will this manicure match the outfit? And how should we do our hair? We can at least answer the last one. These are the party hairstyles that salon experts predict will be big in 2024.

The Hair Trends Taking Over AW24

5 Party Hairstyles For Every Kind Of Celebration

1. Razor Line Bob

It’s been a pretty big year for bobs – so it makes sense to see it go out of 2024 with a bang. And the salon’s pick? The razor line bob. ‘A sharp classic “razor line” bob is perfect for the party season,’ says Tom Lindley, a stylist at Blue Tit Greenwich. ‘It can be worn in a multitude of styles – but a good blueprint is Elle Fanning. Ask your stylist for a sharp one length bob up to the hairline at the nape to achieve this look.’

2. Messy Up-Do

As for the long-haired girlies, you’ll find them scooping up their strands into an ever-trendy messy updo. ‘This is the perfect hairstyle for those looking for effortless glam,’ emphasises Saf Kneafcy, a stylist at Blue Tit Portobello. ‘To get the look, start by using curling to create some texture in the hair, before applying texture or sea salt spray. Next, pull the hair back into a high or low pony, leaving out pieces at the front to frame the face. To create more volume and texture, pull some of the hair at the roots, then take the pony into a few sections and twist each section around the base, finally securing with hair pins.’

3. Ribbons & Bows

Thought you’d seen the last of the bows? Think again. ‘Ribbons and bows are the perfect way to add some soft glam fun to any look,’ says Saf. ‘They can be styled in lots of ways, like adding some soft curls to the hair to do a half up half down for a softer look, or adding ribbons to high ponytails and plaits.’

4. Sleek Wet Look

After a hairstyle that will require very little fiddling with once done? Saf has just the thing: a slicked-back, ‘wet hair’ look. ‘This sophisticated look can work really well for bobs and shorter styles,’ the stylist notes. ‘On damp, towel dried hair, apply a generous amount of gel and comb back into place. Next, spray with hairspray (don’t be scared to use a lot!) and allow hair to air-dry.’ Once set, you’re good to go – no fuss needed.

5. Blowout Curls

And finally, this trend comes with the TikTok seal of approval. ‘We’re moving away from beachy waves this season and into more timeless glamour, with bouncier and more voluminous styles,’ says Saf. ‘Take Matilda Djerf’s style, for example. To create this look, add volume spray to the roots and mousse to the mid lengths and ends. Using a round brush, create volume at the roots by elevating the hair. Then, go through the hair in sections and using a large tong create curls, before allowing them to fully cool down and brushing through with a soft bristle brush.’
