If Only If Opens Pop-up In Notting Hill
I have long hankered after a beautiful nightdress – simple and white, like the one Carrie Bradshaw wears as she pads around her apartment in bare feet (can you picture the episode?). Elegant with a hint of Victoriana, but definitely not granny-ish. If Only If, which is having a pop-up sale on Blenheim Crescent this weekend, has exactly that – floor-length, hand-stitched nighties with lovely details (including a recent addition with gold and silver stitching on the collar for Christmas), as well as shorter versions and others in gingham for winter, a wild-flower print with smocking around the neckline and a few in (slightly saucier) silk.
If Only If was founded by Issy Falkner, who wanted to wear long flowing nighties and couldn’t find any she liked enough. She flew to India and began working with artisans in New Delhi, where her small factory is SEDEX-certified, which protects each cog in the supply chain, pays staff above the living wage and ensures safe and sustainable working conditions (including an eight-hour working day). The business is now owned by her daughter Emily Campbell, who uses those same artisans and has now introduced just enough contemporary flair.
A big believer in slow fashion, If Only If produces small-batch, handmade, season-less designs in natural fabrics – nighties, and also a small collection of eye masks, dressing gowns and pyjamas for children. They come in sizes 6-24 for women; and up to age ten for children. (On a less sunny note, the nighties are a nice present for a friend currently receiving cancer treatment. ‘We find women want to bring something pretty to the situation and the long capacious sleeves cover up unsightly canulas,’ Emily says.)
Emily has invited a few fellow small brands to display at the pop-up, including Bias Editions (colour-popping Murano glass tumblers, carafes and vases, wavy candlesticks and lamps, marbled matchboxes and waste-paper bins in collaboration with Compton Marbling, and cool Bobbin-style brass hardware) and @cloveathome (pressed-flower prints in painted handmade frames made by Rosannagh Stratton in her Berkshire garden studio).
It’s a brilliant one-stop Christmas shop if you’re in London this weekend.
