Long live method dressing
Something Wicked this way comes. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll have already seen that one of Broadway and West End’s most beloved musicals is making its silver screen debut this year – led by a vocal powerhouse cast consisting of Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grand and Jonathan Bailey. And with mere days until the film premieres in cinemas, the Wicked cohort is deep in red (green?) carpet promotions. But it’s onscreen Elphaba, Cynthia Erivo, who continues to steal the show with her take on the method dressing trend. And her latest outfit is possibly her best yet.
Cynthia Erivo Channels Method Dressing On Wicked Press Tour
Over the last few weeks, Cynthia Erivo has been storming the Wicked red carpet in a series of outfits that would make even Elphaba willingly swap out her black hat for a chance to try them on. Taking cues from her onscreen character, the actress has worn everything from witchy black gowns and brocade robes to emerald-studded nails – truly taking on the look and feel of the onscreen musical.
But her latest look might just be our favourite. Making an appearance at the Los Angeles premiere of Wicked over the weekend, Erivo tapped into her inner Elphaba with a green vinyl cut-out dress from Louis Vuitton, complete with a silk organza stole and green patent leather pumps.
And while it wasn’t the first time the actress wore green while promoting Wicked, it’s quickly become one of her most-loved (and Oz-worthy) looks. ‘The LA carpet [look] for me is a such a wow factor – the colour, the fabric, Erivo said of the outfit. ‘It just feels electric – [it lets] my character truly own the colour green in such big, bold way!

‘My stylist Jason [Bolden] had an idea about asking Louis Vuitton about vinyl, which normally isn’t the first go-to when it comes to a carpet,’ she continued. ‘I thought the fabric choice was strong and divine, which is how I see my character. We’ve also worked with LV on a vinyl look before that created a wow factor, so I guess we wanted to try our hand at that again and see what the reaction would be this time.’
She then teamed up the Louis Vuitton number with a jewellery set that could quite easily rival the glittering lights of the Emerald City. Draped around her neck was a Roberto Coin 18-karat white gold, diamond and emerald collar – valued at an eye-watering $750,000 – which she wore with the label’s 18-karat white gold, diamond and emerald rings and earrings.
And right next to the rings on her fingers, Erivo wore possibly the most Oz-coded manicure we’ve ever seen: an emerald set of nails created by LA-based nail tech Rose Hackle.

What Is Method Dressing?
Method dressing is essentially where celebrities wear an outfit that matches the spirit or content of the project they’re involved with. Usually appearing on the red carpet, it’s considered a way to extend the project’s cinematic universe into the real world.
One of the most high profile method dressers of the moment is Zendaya, who is now known for wearing strings of on-theme outfits when promoting one of her films. From tennis-inspired gowns for Challengers to full-body ‘robot’ armour for Dune, the actress has become a master of method dressing.
Some other notable names in the method dressing arena include Margot Robbie, who wore outfits inspired by vintage Barbie dolls throughout the Barbie press run, and Anya Taylor-Joy, who attended the premiere of The Super Mario Bros. Movie in full Princess Peach attire.
When Does Wicked Come Out?
The first instalment of the Wicked duology will arrive in cinemas globally on 22 November 2024 – while Wicked Part Two is scheduled to arrive in theatres on 28 November 2025.
