Filming kicks off soon
Sam Levinson’s dark high school drama, Euphoria, garnered a cult following when it debuted in the summer of 2019 – snowballing into a huge TV event by the time season 2 rolled around in 2022. Catapulting its cast to fame, Euphoria season 3 has always been weighted with question marks due to their newly busy schedules. Flash forward to 2024, and we finally have an insight into when the series might return. Here’s everything you need to know.
Euphoria Season 3: Plot, Cast, Release Date & More
Is Euphoria Coming Back?
Yes, Euphoria season 3 has got the green light, with filming set to commence in January 2025. ‘We are shooting the season, I have read the scripts, we’re happy, we’re moving ahead,’ chairman of HBO’s content Casey Bloys shared last month. ‘I know the show gets a lot of attention now because it has created some genuine movie stars, and they have various projects that they’re working on. But we are shooting this season, so nothing has changed.’
The movie stars in question include Zendaya, Hunter Schafer, Sydney Sweeney and Jacob Elordi, Euphoria being a real breakout moment for the latter three actors. Along with Hollywood strikes, scheduling conflicts with Euphoria’s key stars has nudged season 3 further and further into the future.
When Will Euphoria Season 3 Air?
Euphoria season 3 is expected to air in early 2026. HBO considers the series – which is its fourth most successful original series ever, after Game of Thrones, The Last of Us and House of the Dragon – a ‘tentpole’, so it will slot into the channel’s schedule without conflict with it’s other big name series.
‘Our biggest tentpoles started to come back in rotation this summer with House of The Dragon 2,’ shares JB Perrette, CEO and president of global streaming for HBO’s parent company Warner Bros. Discovery. ‘Then we go to The White Lotus which will come in the first quarter in February, then we go into The Last Of Us season 2 in the second quarter, then we have a new Game of Thrones series, a smaller scale series, that will come in over the summer. As we look even beyond that, we’ll see the third season of Euphoria probably in early 2026, then we get back into House of the Dragon season 3, so we’re now in a cadence of having at least two or three of our major tentpoles every year.’ In late 2026 or early 2027, HBO will usher in its Harry Potter reboot.
What Will Happen?
Euphoria season 2 commenced in January 2022, and four years will have passed before we are reunited with Rue and co. HBO execs have confirmed a time jump will bridge the gap, meaning the cast most likely (hopefully) will not be high school students anymore.
‘One of the issues I think that Sam is thinking about is that he doesn’t want to have it in high school anymore,’ HBO exec Casey Bloys shared earlier this year. ‘That’s where it was set and what made sense then. So when you take it out of that, there’s a lot of back and forth about where to set it and how far in the future to set it and all that stuff. But I think he’s got a take that he’s excited about, and he’s busy writing.’
Euphoria season 3 will be made up of eight episodes.
Who Will Star?
Or: who won’t? Barbie Ferreira (Kat) and Storm Reid (Rue’s younger sister, Gia) have both announced their departures from the show, while Angus Cloud (Rue’s drug dealer Fez) sadly passed away in summer 2023. Meanwhile, after his implied death off screen, Javon Walton (Ashtray) probably won’t return, either.
In July, however, Deadline revealed most of the core cast will return for Euphoria season 3, including:
- Zendaya as Rue Bennett
- Sydney Sweeney as Cassie Howard
- Jacob Elordi as Nate Jacobs
- Eric Dane as Cal Jacobs
- Maude Apatow as Lexi Howard
- Alexa Demie as Maddy Perez
- Hunter Schafer as Jules Vaughn
- Nika King as Leslie Bennett
- Colman Domingo as Ali Muhammed
- Dominic Fike as Elliot
