Here's what's brewing in the coffee world
This year was all about cold brews and oat milk, but what will dominate the coffee world in 2025? From specialty pods to mushroom-infused blends, here are the key coffee trends to look out for over the next 12 months.
What’s Trending In Coffee?
The Rise Of Decaf
Decaf coffee has been on the up for a while now, and it’s set to get even more popular next year. According to Mintel, one in five coffee drinkers globally now regularly up for decaffeinated coffee, while Small Batch Coffee Roasters has reported a seven percent increase in 2024 – which its managing marketer Lauren Shipley puts down to ‘consumers’ desire to enjoy coffee’s rich flavour without the stimulant effect.’
Home Espresso
Home brewing is having a moment, with sales of espresso machines forecasted to rise by 20 percent annually. No doubt this is in part a result of the soaring price of cafe-bought lattes: according to Fresh Ground, the average cup of coffee in the UK will set you back £3.40 per cup, so it’s no surprise we’re increasingly looking for cheaper alternatives.
There’s also a growing trend surrounding home cafe culture, and creating aesthetic coffee nooks. ‘Motivated by a desire to replicate the café experience at home, enhance daily rituals, and reduce long-term coffee costs, this trend aligns with a growing interest in home-centred experiences and home espresso machines offering a way to elevate daily routines,’ notes Lauren. Speciality pods are also everywhere right now: Grind recently launched a Baileys-flavoured blend (without the alcohol), while Nespresso has created an almond croissant pod.
Mushroom Coffee
Mushrooms have been in vogue for years now, but the fungi revolution is going nowhere. One of the biggest trends right now is mushroom coffee: a booming industry expected to grow by $2.36 billion by 2027. With around half the caffeine content of a regular cup, it’s popular among people who find traditional coffee too anxiety-inducing – plus adaptogenic mushrooms offer benefits including stress reduction and improved brain function.
Matcha Competition
Coffee’s biggest competitor right now? Matcha: the bright green-hued drink which has soared in popularity in 2024. Lauded for its health benefits, and containing half the caffeine of traditional coffee, the green tea powder is blended with milk to create aesthetic lattes, which are all over TikTok and Instagram. Most coffee shops offer the green wonder drink nowadays, and we’re seeing an influx in cafes that are entirely dedicated to it. Could 2025 be the year matcha usurps the oat milk flat white as the UK’s most popular drinks order?
Green Beans
As with all industries, coffee brands are increasingly taking steps to improve their environmental credentials: opting for regenerative farming methods and implementing pioneering waste-cutting techniques for coffee grounds. Coffee drinkers are doing their bit too: the reusable coffee cup market is set to grow from over $16.25 billion in 2023 to over $33.82 billion by 2036, and cafes are rewarding customers who do so with discounts.
