Turning 40 is a milestone worth celebrating, and there’s no better way to mark the occasion than with an adventure. When my closest friend proposed a 40th birthday trip to Scotland’s legendary NC500 route, focusing only on ‘the best bits’, I was all in. The NC500 is a bucket-list destination, famed for its stunning landscapes, thrilling roads, and unforgettable experiences. With just a long weekend to spare, we set out to make every moment count. Read on for the ultimate guide to the NC500…

NC500 Guide: How To Plan The Perfect Itinerary

View of Scottish Highlands from a Land Rover

The NC500 (North Coast 500) is Scotland’s ultimate road trip, spanning over 500 miles of breathtaking Highland scenery. While most travellers take a week to complete the full circuit, our itinerary condensed the highlights into three days. For busy professionals juggling jobs and family, this weekend escape was the ideal way to experience the magic of the Highlands.

Day 1: Inverness to Ullapool

Flying into Inverness – just an hour from London – we picked up our transport: two iconic Land Rover Defenders. A heritage 110 V8 in Marine Blue and a sleek 2024 model combined rugged capability with modern luxury, making them the perfect vehicles for tackling the NC500’s winding roads.

After a restful night at the conveniently located Leonardo Hotel Inverness, we set off for our first destination: Ullapool. This charming coastal town is a gateway to the NC500’s western wonders. With the sun shining, we enjoyed a relaxed lunch at The Seafood Shack, sampling fresh oysters, haddock wraps, and smoked trout salads. The combination of incredible seafood and harbour views set the tone for the trip.

Day 2: Summer Isles and Torridon Luxury

From Ullapool, we headed to the Summer Isles Hotel, stopping en route for a bracing dip in the Atlantic. This boutique retreat offered a cosy base for exploring the remote beauty of the Summer Isles. With whisky in hand, we watched the sunset over the rugged coastline – a quintessential Highland experience.

Retracing our route through Ullapool the next morning, we made our way to Badachro Distillery. Renowned for its handcrafted gin and whisky, this family-run distillery was a highlight for our birthday boy. A sunny lunch at the nearby Badachro Inn kept spirits high as we continued to our next luxury stop: The Torridon.

Set on the shores of Loch Torridon, this former hunting lodge blends five-star refinement with rustic charm. We indulged in espresso martinis at the Beinn Bar before savouring a fine dining experience featuring game dishes and decadent desserts.

Day 3: Bealach na Bà and Applecross

No NC500 guide would be complete without tackling Bealach na Bà, one of Scotland’s most iconic mountain passes. This winding, single-track road offers breathtaking views that are as thrilling as the drive itself. At the summit, we paused to soak in the panoramic vistas before descending to the quaint village of Applecross.

Lunch at the Applecross Inn was a serendipitous discovery. Sitting on the edge of the Atlantic, we enjoyed fresh seafood and cold Tennents while basking in the serene beauty of the Highlands. The perfect end to our adventure.

Back to Inverness

The drive back to Inverness was smooth and reflective. The NC500’s charm lies not only in its dramatic landscapes but also in its ability to disconnect you from the demands of modern life. For us, it was a transformative escape filled with laughter, friendship, and unforgettable memories.
