This short hairstyle is set to become a salon staple
If a hair transformation is on the cards for 2025, then make sure your cut of choice is the carved bob. This short hairstyle is all about sculpting and, well, ‘carving’ the perfect hairstyle to create a textured, lived-in look. And it’s about to have a major moment in the salon.
What Is A Carved Bob?
While most bob trends focus on the style of the cut, a carved bob places emphasis on the cutting technique itself. ‘The word “carve” describes the shaping of a heavily weighted, but still texturised, bob,’ explains Charlie Illi, an advanced technician and stylist at Brooks & Brooks. ‘It differs from the blunt, layered and graduated bob as a more creative and sculpted style, using the edge of scissors or a razor to create internal texture. In comparison, other bob techniques have a more technical approach.’ This sculpting gives the carved bob a more lived-in look, with grown-out, tapered ends that lend it movement.
Charlie also tells us that the emphasis on technique means that each carved bob is tailored to the individual – a quality that makes it all the more popular in the salon. ‘It is shaped independently to the customer, when it comes to length, width and face framing,’ she says. ‘It also works really well with textured hair, so there is less commitment for the styling.’ Low maintenance and high impact? One celebrity that has made an impact with this style is none other than actress Sydney Sweeney. ‘She stunned us all at the Oscars with her amazing carved bob,’ notes Charlie. ‘It was styled with a soft shiny wave to create the ultimate glamour look.’
Who Suits This Cut?
‘In terms of working with face shapes, the carved bob is an amazing all rounder,’ emphasises Charlie. ‘The bob is essentially carved into shape to fit each individual. The length of the bob can shorten or lengthen the face; the same goes to the width of the bob adding volume or slimming volume.’
Although the stylist warns that this may not be a cut for all hair types. ‘With the carved bob, you have more room to play with and highlight texture,’ she says. ‘But for straight and/or fine haired clients, the blunt or French bob might be more suitable.’
How To Ask For A Carved Bob In The Salon
‘At the salon, you’ll want to ask for a stylist who specialises in bob cutting and razor cutting,’ says Charlie. ‘Most salons have an expert cutter, and a lot of hairstylists love to cut a carved bob with a razor. So getting the right stylist is key.’
She also suggests bringing references pictures, as these are ‘always a good way to show your inspiration (as long as they are realistic). And when you arrive at your appointment, wear your hair as you usually do, so the stylist has a good idea of what your hair looks like in its natural state.’
How To Style A Carved Bob
Carved bob in place, the next step is getting to a point where you can successfully style it at home. While the details are down to the individual, Charlie suggests opting for volumising techniques. ‘Personally, I love the carved bob blow dried up side down with a Denman brush, as when cut correctly it will settle perfectly into place,’ she says. ‘For textured hair it’s amazing to add some mousse or texture spray and let the hair dry naturally for an effortless look.’
What Next?
Think you’ve seen the last of the bob? Think again. ‘Generally speaking, the bob will always be a part of the trends landscape. It never gets old,’ highlights Charlie. ‘But I think the bob is forever changing in terms of shape and style, which is incredibly exciting as a stylist to take a classic cut and add a modern twist.’
