The Shullet Is Coming For Salons In 2025

Shag + Mullet = Shullet
If it’s not a bob you’re after in 2025, how about a shullet? This edgy cut combines two of our favourite alternative hairstyles – and it’s set to have a major revival in the new year.
What Is A Shullet?
‘The shullet blends two of the most prominent cuts from the last year: the shag and mullet,’ explains Andrew Heasman, International Creative Director at RUSH HAIR. ‘Emerging as one of the trendiest looks for the new year, the shullet features elements of both the mullet and the shag cut to cultivate a versatile short-up-top, long-in-the-back hairstyle that’ll dominate catwalks around the globe.’
So it takes elements from both of these trendy styles – but what sets it apart as a new cut? ‘While referring to the shag and mullet, the shullet remains completely unique with the addition of face framing fringe,’ notes Andrew. ‘But it does combine the volume, shape and length of the mullet with the natural texture, movement and disconnected layers that are typically featured in the shag cut.’

Andrew also tells us that various add-ons designed to tailor the look to the individual also help to define it as its own separate entity. ‘This style can be adapted to harmonise with any look,’ he says. ‘Pair with a heavy or wispy fringe, opt for shorter layers throughout the top section, leaving longer length in the back and side sections. It’s about being creative and trying something new.’
And while still an up-and-coming hair trend, the shullet is already receiving attention on the celebrity circuit. ‘This past season, the shullet has become a fundamental staple in the “cool girl” look,’ Andrew tells us. ‘Miley Cyrus, Billie Eilish and Halsey have all been seen rocking this cut lately – and I’m totally here for it! While pristinely polished looks have dominated over the past 12 months, the shullet works in favour of the messier, undone styles that have been creeping back onto runways and red carpets.’
Who Suits This Cut?
So who will be able to work this statement style? ‘The shullet harmonises best with the face shape and facial features of those with oval or square shaped faces – beautifully accentuating the sharper definition of their jawline,’ notes Andrew. ‘Both those with straight and curly hair also suit a shullet. For those with straighter hair, it will amp up the volume and body of the hair, while those with curlier hair will find this style enhances your hair’s natural volume and texture.’

How To Ask For A Shullet In The Salon
‘If you’re looking for a shullet, ask your stylist for the shape of a mullet with long disconnected layers worked throughout,’ recommends Andrew. ‘Have a chat with them about what you’re looking for and they’ll be able to give you advice based on what will suit you best. An inspiration picture is always helpful too.’
How To Style A Shullet
Designed to make a statement, Andrew says this cut is best styled without out neatness in mind. ‘The shullet is all about texture and definition – so when it comes to styling, it’s all about amplifying the volume and creating that messy “lived-in” look,’ he emphasises. ‘Reach for the sea salt spray to add more definition throughout the lengths and work a mattifying paste through the hair on the top of the head for more volume.’
What Next?
Expect plenty more playfulness from this look going forward. ‘I’d love to see a lot more fun colourways with the shullet rather than your typical block colour,’ muses Andrew. ‘Dark lowlights on a lighter base would be the epitome of cool.’
