‘From the Heart to the Hands’ is currently at the Grand Palais in Paris.
Dolce & Gabbana’s acclaimed exhibition ‘Du Cœur à la Main: Dolce & Gabbana’ (From the Heart to the Hands) opened at Paris’ Grand Palais on Friday ahead of Paris Fashion Week next week. The 10-week residency is staged inside the exhibition hall and follows the show’s debut at Palazzo Reale in Milan last spring, in which the exhibition was consistently sold out. But how can you get tickets for this run, and will the Dolce & Gabbana exhibition come to London after Paris?
From The Heart To The Hands
The exhibition is set across the newly renovated Grand Palais, commanding 1200 square metres of floor space in spaces grand enough to do justice to Dolce & Gabbana’s most show-stopping designs. There are more than 200 looks from the Alta Moda and Alta Sartoria collections, plus 300 additional handcrafted objects and accessories, including statement Sicilian ceramics. Think maximalism-plus, statement piece after statement piece, where each garment is highly embellished and hand embroidered, with collections ranging from rich jewel tones featuring religious iconography to almost pitch-black spaces featuring rows of all-black gowns. A visit to the opera is on the cards, too, in one particularly moving room, a stage setting surrounded by red velvet curtains and several red velvet seats from which to take it all in. Another stand-out piece is a gown encrusted with glass mosaics from Orsoni Venzia, the glassmakers behind the golden mosaics from of St Mark’s Basilica, which pays homage to Venice’s Murano glass.

Why Paris?
Milan was the obvious choice for the exhibition opening for the Italian design duo, and this is the first time in their 40-year-history that Dolce & Gabbana have showcased their work in the French capital. Paris, the birthplace of haute couture is the perfect location for the exhibition, showcasing a dedication to art in the pursuit of fashion, and four decades of Italian craftsmanship. Curator Florence Müller said: ‘The story of couture is global. Embroidery, lace, brocade – they existed long before Parisian couture, in Italy, in India, and beyond.
‘Luxury goods and artisans traveled more than we think,’ Müller said. ‘The silk and brocades used at Versailles Palace came from India, and Italian artisans were hired to craft the Hall of Mirrors, [Fashion] is constant exchanges and inspirations — this exhibit reveals what time forgot.’

Will The Exhibition Come To London?
Even on opening weekend, as the Italian design duo’s show made its historic arrival in Paris, discussions began as to whether the show would move on after Paris to another of the fashion capitals, New York or London. The show is as impactful as the 2011 McQueen Savage Beauty exhibition that made its way to London some four years after its New York opening, and both the MET or the V&A would make outstanding homes for this unmissable show. There are currently no reported plans for another run of the show outside of Paris or Milan, but we have contacted both Dolce & Gabbana and V&A for comment on whether we can expect to see From the Heart to the Hands: Dolce & Gabbana in London anytime soon.
