Feeling behind? Here’s who made the Oscars shortlist.
The 2025 Oscar Nominations In Brief
The race for Best Picture is officially on – and, where 2024’s nominations heralded an Oppenheimer-dominated ceremony, 2025’s nominations have thrown the competition wide open. Ten films are up for the prestigious award, spanning everything from the Cannes Palm d’Or-winning indie film Anora to Jacques Audiard’s controversial Emilia Pérez (a Spanish-language drama set in Mexico directed by a Frenchman and filmed in Paris was never going to please everyone). Regardless of Audiard’s detractors, he has made Oscars history: Emilia Pérez is not just 2025’s most nominated film with 13 nods, but the most nominated non-English-language film in history; and the film’s lead star Karla Sofía Gascón is the first ever openly trans actor to be nominated both for Best Actress and in any acting category at all.
Speaking of the acting categories, 13 of 20 nominees are Oscar-first-timers, including Gascón, Anora‘s Mikey Madison, Wicked‘s Ariana Grande and The Substance‘s Demi Moore. The latter has been the topic of many an Academy Awards conversation after career-long snubs; her nomination is hot on the heels of her Golden Globes win, with the horror film receiving a surprise Best Picture nomination to boot.
Sebastian Stan has also bagged a Best Actor nomination for his turn as a young Donald Trump in The Apprentice, a salacious acknowledgment just days after the President returned to the oval office. Co-star and fellow Oscar-first-timer Jeremy Strong has also been commended in the Supporting Actor category, kicking off a Succession battle with A Real Pain‘s Kieran Culkin. It’s a stiff competition for Best Actor: Stan will go up against 2002 winner Adrien Brody, 2017 nominee Timothée Chalamet, 1996 nominee Ralph Fiennes, and Colman Domingo who is nominated in the category for the second year running.
Here are the headlines:
- Emilia Pérez has the most nominations with 13, followed by Wicked and The Brutalist with 10 apiece.
- Best Picture nominations for Emilia Pérez and Wicked mark the first time two musicals have been nominated in the category since Oliver! and Funny Girl in 1968.
- Coralie Fargeat’s Best Picture nomination for The Substance marks the sixth year running at least one film directed by a woman has been nominated in the category; her Best Director nod is the tenth ever nomination for a woman in the category.
- Latvia has its first ever nomination in Best International Feature Film for Flow. The film is the third animated film to ever be nominated in this category.
- Diane Warren’s Original Song nomination marks her eighth consecutive showing in the category, with 16 nominations in total.
