Where to take your grown-out bob this year

Working with the remnants of your bob era? Or craving a change from super-long lengths? Then you’ll want to try the Charlotte cut. Dubbed as one of the biggest hair trends of the new year, this mid-length cut is about to take the salon by storm.

What Is A Charlotte Cut?

‘A “Charlotte cut” is a traditional collar bone-length cut,’ explains Charlie Illi, top stylist and advanced technician at Brooks & Brooks. This is essentially an ultra-feminine take on the midi cut, infused with all the romance of a noughties romcom – think Sex & The City‘s Charlotte, with whom the trend shares a name.

It’s this low-effort put-togetherness that makes the cut appealing for today’s salon audience. ‘It’s often all one length, but sometimes has a minimal layer running through the cut,’ says Charlie. ‘This makes it a very low maintenance haircut so very ideal for anyone who doesn’t want to spend much time on their hair in the morning.

‘It is a wearable style, meaning it is suitable for many people. But also for anyone that enjoys having length to play with different looks, such as ponytails and blowdries. So, overall, it is a very versatile hair cut.’

And just like 2024’s old money trend, the Charlotte cut screams preppy style. We can easily picture someone wearing it in a country club, worn with an Alice band and a dainty cardigan, or at a coffee shop, with butterfly clips running through the sides. Although the more modern rendition gives the look a little edge; worn loose and glossy with a sharp flick at the ends.

The cut hasn’t escaped the notice of the celebrity set, either. ‘Kendall Jenner has been spotted with a blonde Charlotte cut recently,’ notes Charlie. ‘It is not surprising that a well known catwalk model has chosen the Charlotte cut, as its versatility means she can walk the runway in different looks with ease.’

Who Suits This Cut?

‘Personally I think the Charlotte cut suits straight, fine haired clients,’ notes Charlie. ‘This is because you are building up volume in the ends with minimal layering. So anyone with thick, frizzy hair would have to make sure to tame it well.

‘And in terms of face shape, this cut suits pretty much every face shape, only a slightly long face shape would not be as ideal, as it prolongs the optics.’

How To Ask For A Charlotte Cut In The Salon

In the salon, ask for a cut that sits around your collarbone. ‘You’ll also need to consult your hairdresser on whether the Charlotte cut works with your hair texture – be aware of the styling if
your hair is textured,’ Charlie adds. ‘Make sure you and your stylist are on the same page too. Bringing some reference pictures saved on your phone is always helpful to let your stylist understand your vision.’

How To Style A Charlotte Cut

Styling is super important when nailing the polished look of this cut. ‘It tends to look its best with a simple blowout,’ notes Charlie. ‘Using a big round brush and some volumising products, create a flick in or out at the ends. To finish it off, use some smoothing and shine finishing products to show it off.’

What Next?

Charlie sees the Charlotte cut as a potential next step for last year’s bob movement. ‘I think we will be seeing the Charlotte cut a lot in the future as it is also a great cut to get after growing out a bob,’ she explains. ‘So it also works for a transition cut. Its simplicity, glamour and effortless style will be a popular cut in the future.’
