While the UK is a nation of football fans, American football is experiencing something of a British renaissance. Every autumn, the National Football League (aka NFL) visits Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (the first purpose-built NFL stadium outside of the US) to the delight of the UK’s estimated 14.3 million fans (that’s around one in five Brits). And in 2024, the gem in the sport’s crown broke its UK viewing records, with a whopping 3.4 million Brits tuning in to watch the Super Bowl across Sky and ITV, a 48 percent increase on the year before. Fancy joining them this year? Here’s how.

What Is The Super Bowl?

The Super Bowl is the grand finale of the NFL season, deciding which team wins the league championship. Played every year since 1966, always on a Sunday, it is a huge event in the US sports and cultural calendar. Every year, it is the most-watched sporting event in the US – often the most-watched broadcast of the year overall – and the 2024 game (Super Bowl LVIII) was the most-watched TV broadcast in the US since the 1969 moon landing, attracting an average of 123.4 million viewers. Associated with hotdogs, beer, chicken wings, nachos and more, research shows the Super Bowl is one of the US’s largest food-consuming events of the year, second only to Thanksgiving.

Since 2022, the Super Bowl has been played on the second Sunday in February. This year, that’s Sunday 9 February, with the Kansas City Chiefs returning to the field once again – their fifth appearance in the last six years. They will go head-to-head with the Philadelphia Eagles, who last made the final in 2023, losing to the Chiefs 38–35. The game will be played at Caesars Superdome, New Orleans, Louisiana.
