Feltonfleet Pupil Ranks Second Fastest in Great Britain in 100m Butterfly

Feltonfleet is proud to celebrate the exceptional achievement of Sophia Samonas, who secured Gold in the 100m butterfly, breaking the Surrey Schools record at the ESSA Surrey Schools Championships this weekend. Her phenomenal performance follows her success in the Surrey Age Group Championship 2025 earlier this month, where she became the fastest in the South East for 100m butterfly in her age group, with a time that ranked her second in Great Britain, missing the top spot by a mere 0.1 seconds.

The Surrey Age Group Championships 2025, held at Guildford Surrey Sports Park, marked an outstanding weekend for Sophia, who competed in seven events and reached the finals in six. She took home multiple medals, including Gold in the 100m butterfly, as well as podium finishes in the 50m Freestyle, 200m Individual Medley, and 400m Individual Medley.

A standout athlete at Feltonfleet, Sophia has been part of the school community since joining its nursery nearly ten years ago. Her success this month follows years of hard work, commitment, and resilience, which are ensuring she maximises her natural talent in the water. Feltonfleet’s Headmistress, Shelley Lance, expressed immense pride in Sophia’s accomplishment, stating, ‘We are thrilled to see Sophia achieve success in the pool. Her achievement on the national stage is testament to her incredible talent, dedication, and mental strength. It also highlights the excellent coaching and support she receives at Feltonfleet. I anticipate we will be hearing more about Sophia’s triumphs in the future, and have no doubt she will continue to attain great things.’
