We're far from done with Hallyu hair
If it’s not K-pop, K-dramas and K-fashion taking over our feeds, then it’s usually Korean beauty trends. And the latest isn’t a buzzy skin cream or face mask, but instead a hairstyle: the Korean pixie cut. Here’s everything you need to know.
What Is A Korean Pixie Cut?
A popular short hairstyle in the country it is named after, a Korean pixie cut features a slightly longer top with volume, side-swept bangs and a softer, more feminine appearance compared to a traditional pixie cut.
Although you might also find more boyish elements, like that of a wispy bowl cut, cut in combination with the short length of a pixie. ‘This look is similar to the original pixie, but with a slightly 90s boy band feel,’ adds Anna Wiig, hair stylist, colourist and founder of wiig.

‘A Korean pixie cut tends to be shaped tightly at the base of the nape of the neck, giving a full feminine shape to the back. It also has soft layers coming through the sides, which create side bangs. And, unlike other pixie cuts, this style has a fringe and is worn with more of a centre parting.’
As mentioned, the look is a popular one in Korea – recently repped by the likes of actress Go Joon Hee and K-pop group (G)-Idle’s Soyeon.
Who Suits This Cut?
It’s worth noting that this is a cut that has been designed for Korean hair, which tends to be on the thicker and straighter side. ‘This style is great for thick hair, as you need volume on the crown to achieve it,’ adds Anna. ‘It does suit a lot of face shapes though, including oval, round, heart-shaped and square.’

How To Ask For A Korean Pixie Cut In The Salon
Specific hairstyles like the Korean pixie cut might need a little more explaining in the salon, notes Anna – so be prepared to talk through exactly what you want with your stylist. ‘For this style, I would recommend showing a photograph of the style you would like, ensuring you confirm the length and fullness of the bangs that you have in mind for it,’ adds Anna.
How To Style A Korean Pixie Cut
Good news: This style is very low maintenance.
‘Focus on creating volume, particularly on the top sections,’ advises Anna. ‘Try using some volumising mousse on the roots and blow-drying at the top. You should also style the fringe by bending it to frame the face, or opt for a soft texture spray or sea salt spray.’
What Next
Could this be a big year for fringe-focussed styling? Anna thinks so. ‘I believe this could evolve by making the fringe more of a focal point,’ she says. ‘The fringe could look heavier and fuller to make it more of a bowl 90s boy band look.’
