Is The Buffy Reboot Happening?

Yes, it seems it’s full steam ahead on the Buffy reboot, with sources telling Variety that a sequel series is nearing a pilot order at Hulu. The news comes as rumours swirl around original lead star Sarah Michelle Gellar, who is reportedly in final talks to reprise her role as the iconic title character. However, it seems Gellar will star in a recurring role – with a new Slayer leading the show.

What Will Happen?

In every generation there is a chosen one – and it’s time for Buffy to step aside and let a new Slayer take the reins. The Buffy reboot is being described as the next chapter in the Buffyverse, but that’s all we know so far.

A reboot has been toyed with for many years but never taken seriously until now. Gellar noted in December that, while she ‘always used to say no’ to the prospect of a reboot ‘because it’s in its bubble and it’s so perfect,’ ‘watching Sex and the City and seeing Dexter’ has made her realise ‘there are ways to do [a reboot]’ successfully. It ‘definitely does get your mind thinking’, she said.

What Else Do We Know?

While the pilot hasn’t been created yet (inching ever-closer to being ordered by Hulu), there is a writing team currently doing the leg work. Nora and Lila Zuckerman are both attached to the project, writing, showrunning and executive producing. Chloé Zhao, meanwhile, is attached to direct and executive produce. Deadline, meanwhile, reports a writers room is being set up – a sign that things are being taken seriously. Everything is being overseen by Hulu and 20th Century – though they have declined to comment on the Buffy reboot rumours.

This isn’t the first Buffy reboot. In fact, the Buffy The Vampire Slayer TV series itself is a reboot of a 1992 film of the same name starring Kristy Swanson alongside Donald Sutherland, Paul Reubens, Rutger Hauer and Luke Perry. Originally running from 1992 to 1997, a Buffy spin-off has also been created: Angel, centring on the titular vampire (played by David Boreanaz) whose human soul was restored to him by a curse as a punishment for murdering one of his own kind.
