Blank Street has a new TikTok hit

Move over matcha, there’s a new trending drink in town. Daydream lattes have taken over TikTok, winning coffee drinkers over with their sweet taste and aesthetic look. Created by buzzy Brooklyn-founded cafe chain Blank Street, the drink has soared to popularity Stateside since launching last year – and now it has arrived on UK soil.

What Is A Daydream Latte?

The Daydream Latte is a drink created by coffeehouse Blank Street. It’s made with the cafe’s house blend of espresso, vanilla bean, honey and cinnamon, available in both hot or iced form, with your milk of choice. In the same line is the Daydream Matcha, which swaps the coffee for matcha. Nothing too out of the ordinary – but New Yorkers have gone mad for it, even queuing outside stores to get a taste. And there’s good news for Brits: the viral drink is now available in UK branches too.

What’s The Hype Around Blank Street?

Blank Street started its life in 2020 as a tiny coffee cart in Williamsburg, helmed by founders Issam Freiha and Vinay Menda – friends hailing from the world of not hospitality, but tech. The premise was simple: grab-and-go, high volume coffee made with espresso machines by Eversys. But with its signature sage green facade and sleek, minimalist aesthetic, the brand was destined for viral fame.

It quickly garnered a cult following, and locations began popping up on streets across New York, heading to Boston and Washington before going international, landing in London the summer of 2022. Londoners were equally sold on the fun, colourful drinks – think purple blueberry matcha and cherry cold brews – and you’ll now find branches dotted all over the capital. This month, Blank Street opened its first outpost in Edinburgh, with hopes to launch a site in Glasgow next.

Can You Make A Daydream Latte At Home?

To recreate the viral recipe at home, simply mix a shot of espresso with a teaspoon of honey, ¼ of a teaspoon of vanilla extract or a dash of vanilla syrup, and ¼ of a teaspoon of cinnamon. Mix together, then add your choice of milk – heated if you’re having it hot, or with cubes of iced for a cool take. For the matcha version, swap the espresso for a teaspoon of matcha, whisked with hot water.
