Meet the salon sharpshooter taking over inspo board

Overwhelmed by all the ‘trendy’ haircuts on your social feed? If it’s too much choice, then you’ve come to the right place. Pulling together some of the biggest hair trends into one cut, the bullet bob is the next big thing in the salon.

What Is A Bullet Bob?

‘The bullet bob is a gender-neutral haircut that’s short on the sides and longer in the back – imagine a classic bob meeting a mullet,’ explains Chris Grimley, a textured hair specialist and owner of Fusion Hair Co. and Textured Curl Academy. ‘As worn by Florence Pugh, this cut takes inspiration from the mullet, wolf cut and shag – styles that have dominated TikTok in recent years. It’s bold, modern, and effortlessly cool.’

The cut comes hots on the heels of last year’s wave of gender-neutral, low-maintenance styles – and has recently received a lot of attention on the celebrity circuit. ‘As mentioned, Florence Pugh has been seen wearing this style,’ notes Chris. ‘But we’re also seeing variations on stars like Kristen Stewart and Doja Cat. What I think makes this cut so appealing is its adaptability – it can be worn in a relaxed, tousled way or styled with more precision for a sharper look. It’s a versatile choice that works across different personal styles.’

How Does It Differ From A Classic Bob?

It’s all in the cut and styling, says Chris. ‘Traditional bobs are typically focused on precision and uniformity, but the bullet bob embraces texture and movement. The back retains weight, while soft layers at the front create an undone, lived-in effect. It’s a bit rebellious but balanced with just the right amount of refinement.’

Who Suits This Cut?

‘For me, the most exciting part of this trend is that, with the right technique, it can work on all hair types,’ Chris tells us. ‘Too often, certain cuts are seen as “only for straight hair” or “not suitable for curls,” but that’s simply not true. With textured hair, it’s all about adapting the cutting method to maintain structure while enhancing natural movement. The bullet bob works well with straight, wavy, and curly hair textures. For those with curls or coils, the shape can be customised to maintain volume in all the right places.

‘In terms of face shape, the cut suits most individuals because its length can be adjusted anywhere from the jawline to just above the shoulders,’ she adds. ‘A slightly longer version tends to look great on round faces, while sharper angles complement square jawlines nicely.’

How To Ask For A Bullet Bob In The Salon?

When requesting a bullet bob in the salon, make sure you have a clear idea of what you want in mind – as well as a photo for your stylist. ‘Always bring reference images,’ emphasises Crhis. ‘This haircut is all about that balance between structure and texture, so I’d recommend asking for a cut that’s short at the sides and longer at the back, with razor-cut layers for movement. If you have curly or coily hair, make sure your stylist understands how to shape and cut textured hair.

‘Also, be clear about how much maintenance you’re willing to commit to,’ she adds. ‘This cut does require reshaping every six weeks to keep its edge.’

How To Style A Bullet Bob

Styling comes down to personal preference, but for a more natural look Chris suggests ‘enhancing your hair’s texture. I always recommend air drying or using your fingers to dry your hair with a texturising product for that effortless, tousled style. If you’re looking for more definition, you can create some waves using a curling wand or straighteners. For curly hair, a curl-enhancing mousse or cream will help maintain your curls’ shape without adding weight.’

What Next?

Chris sees more personalised takes on the bullet bob becoming popular going forward. ‘As more people embrace individual expression in their hair, we’ll likely see even more variations,’ she explains. ‘Perhaps softer, longer versions for those who prefer a more subtle take. It’s also encouraging to see more salons focusing on education, ensuring that all hair types are considered when it comes to trends like this. The bullet bob has the potential to work for everyone with the right approach.’
