A common staple in the spa, facial steamers are one of this year's must-have skincare devices. But what do they actually do? We ask a dermatologist their take on the trend
The top bit of kit to have in your skincare line-up? According to the experts, it’s a facial steamer. Here’s everything you need to know about the beauty tool – and if it really works.
What Is A Facial Steamer?
‘A facial steamer is a skincare device that releases a warm, gentle mist onto the skin, helping to open up the pores,’ explains Dr Nyla Raja, a cosmetic doctor and dermatologist. ‘By loosening dirt, oil and impurities trapped within the skin, it allows for a deeper cleanse and makes extractions more effective. The warmth of the steam also encourages better circulation, which can promote a healthy glow, and enhances hydration by increasing moisture levels. Steaming also preps the skin to absorb skincare products more efficiently, making serums and moisturisers work more effectively.’

What Are The Benefits Of Using A Facial Steamer?
It might not immediately look like steam will have a big impact on skin, but Dr Nyla tells us that incorporating the device into our skincare routine can bring about some major benefits. ‘It offers a deep cleanse by softening sebum and debris within the pores, reducing the risk of breakouts,’ she highlights. ‘And the increased hydration helps to plump and refresh the skin, leaving it looking more radiant. A facial steamer can also help increase circulation, which boosts oxygen and nutrient delivery to the skin, creating a natural glow. Additionally, steaming enhances product absorption, meaning serums and active ingredients penetrate more deeply for better results.
‘Beyond skincare, the process itself is incredibly relaxing and can be a great addition to a self-care routine,’ she adds.
Does It Help With Acne?
As Dr Nyla mentioned, a facial steamer can open up the pores in our skin and soften any lingering dirt – creating the ideal conditions for removal. ‘Steaming can be beneficial for those with acne-prone skin, as it helps to loosen blackheads and whiteheads, making them easier to extract without damaging the skin,’ she explains. ‘By clearing out congestion, it can help prevent new breakouts from forming.’
Although the dermatologist warns that any kind of extraction should be done with caution – especially when it comes to more sensitive acne conditions. ‘Those with inflammatory acne, such as cystic or pustular acne, should be cautious. Excessive heat and humidity can sometimes worsen irritation, so it’s important to monitor how your skin reacts and avoid steaming if it exacerbates redness or discomfort.’
Does It Work For All Skin Types?
‘Facial steaming can be beneficial for most skin types,’ starts Dr Nyla. ‘But those with very sensitive, rosacea-prone, or inflamed acne-prone skin should use it cautiously. The heat can sometimes trigger redness or irritation, so it’s important to listen to your skin and adjust usage accordingly.’

How To Use A Facial Steamer
When it comes to incorporating a facial steamer into your routine, Dr Nyla tells us the tool should be used ‘on freshly cleansed skin to avoid trapping dirt and makeup in open pores. Position your face about six to 10 inches from the steam and allow it to work for about five to 10 minutes. It’s important not to overdo it, as excessive steaming can lead to dryness or irritation.’
Once done, you can them move on to the other steps in your routine – especially hydrating products. ‘After steaming, follow up with hydrating skincare products while the skin is still warm and receptive,’ she says.
And this isn’t a step that you’ll need to take every time you undertake your skincare routine. ‘Incorporating steaming into your routine once or twice a week, preferably in the evening, can help prepare the skin for deeper hydration and treatment serums,’ advises Dr Nyla. ‘This frequency is ideal for keeping the pores clear without overstimulating the skin. Those with sensitive skin may find that steaming less frequently, around once every two weeks, is more suitable to avoid irritation.’
Dos & Don’ts
DO: Hydrate
‘After steaming, it’s essential to follow up with hydrating and soothing skincare,’ recommends Dr Nyla. ‘Applying a serum, hydrating mask, or moisturiser immediately after will help lock in moisture and maximise the benefits.’
DON’T: Exfoliate
‘It’s best to avoid using strong exfoliants, retinol, or other potent active ingredients right after steaming, as the skin may be more sensitive.’
DO: Drink Water
‘Make sure to drink plenty of water before and after steaming,’ emphasises the dermatologist. ‘As the process can cause slight dehydration.’
DON’T: Pick
It might be tempting, but try not to touch your face straight after. ‘Touching or picking at the skin should be avoided, as open pores can be more prone to irritation and bacteria,’ warns Dr Nyla.
DO: Herbal Extracts
‘For an enhanced experience, some people like to add herbal extracts or essential oils to their steamer,’ says Dr Nyla. ‘Ingredients such as chamomile or lavender can help to soothe the skin, while tea tree oil may provide antibacterial benefits.’
DON’T: Overuse
‘While steaming is an effective addition to a skincare routine, overuse can lead to dryness or increased sensitivity,’ Dr Nyla tells us. ‘So moderation is key.’
