Anora: How To Watch 2025’s Oscar Best Picture Winner In The UK

Anora is Best Picture, lead star Mikey Madison is Best Actress, and creator Sean Baker scoops up Best Director, Editing and Original Screenplay – but how can British film lovers stream the indie flick here in the UK?
Of the plethora of headlines emerging from the Oscars, we’re pleased to see Anora getting its flowers. The low-budget romantic comedy-drama bagged the Palme d’Or when it debuted at Cannes last year, meaning its Best Picture win is the fourth time the prestigious French film festival has predicted the Academy’s tastes. But with that low budget (circa $6 million) comes limited distribution: Anora was never released widely in UK cinemas, instead favoured by independent and arthouse joints (and Odeon).
Flash forward to March, hot off the heels of its successful Oscar run, plenty of film lovers will now be keen to stream the sex worker flick. Here’s how.

What Is Anora About?
Anora is a romantic comedy-drama centring on Anora ‘Ani’ Mikheeva (Mikey Madison), a 23-year-old stripper living in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. With Russian heritage, Ani is called upon one day at her club when Ivan ‘Vanya’ Zakharov (Mark Eydelshteyn), the son of a Russian oligarch, arrives and requests a dancer who can speak Russian. Although Vanya is in the States for college, his English is broken and he spends most of his time partying with his rich friends and playing video games in his family’s riverside Brooklyn mansion. Captivated by Ani, he invites her into her life – and we soon see the consequences.

Who Is Sean Baker?
Sean Baker is an American filmmaker. While he is best known for Anora, 54-year-old Baker made his directorial debut back in 2000 with Four Letter Words, which explores the views, attitudes, language and psyche of young men in US suburbia. He followed this up with Take Out (2004), a co-direction with Shih-Ching Tsou, Prince of Broadway (2008), Starlet (2012) and 2015’s Tangerine, a film centred on a transgender sex worker shot on three iPhone 5Ss.
By 2017, Baker was attracting more attention and a cult following: The Florida Project (2017) was critically acclaimed at Cannes and theatrically released in the US by A24, while Red Rocket (2021) competed for the Palme D’Or and was again picked up by A24. This all set a solid foundation for Anora, which is far from Baker’s first film concerned with sex work: Starlet, Tangerine and Red Rocket all centre on characters in the sex work industry.
Anora was written, directed, produced and edited by Baker, which is why he earned so many Academy Awards on 2 March. In fact, Baker is the very first person to win four Oscars for the same film, and is tied with Walt Disney for the most Academy Awards won in a single night. His awards are Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing, while Anora’s fifth award of the evening, Best Actress, is Mikey Madison’s.

Where Else Does Mikey Madison Star?
Mikey Madison’s breakout role came in 2019 when she starred as Sadie in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. This along with a role in 2022’s Scream would prove to be career-changing for Madison: Baker cast Madison as the lead of Anora before he’d even written the film after seeing her performances in these two flicks.
On TV, Madison had a main role as Max in FX’s Better Things from 2016 to 2022, starred in two episodes of Bravo’s Imposters, and has most recently been seen as Judith in Apple TV’s Lady in the Lake.
Madison’s debut dates back to 2017 when she appeared as the titular character in Sean H. Scully’s Liza, Liza, Skies Are Grey. This was followed up with small roles in Nostalgia and Monster in 2018, before Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in 2019.
