What Is MobLand About?
Originally pitched The Donovans, as an origin story for Showtime’s 2013–2020 drama Ray Donovan starring Liev Schreiber in the title role, MobLand is an upcoming organised crime drama centring on loyal fixer Harry Da Souza (played by Tom Hardy) working for a powerful family tussling for power within the global crime syndicate. Instead of the Donovans, we centre on the Harrigan family, led by Irish power couple Conrad and Maeve, played by Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren.
‘My name’s Conrad Harrigan, family man,’ Brosnan says in the trailer. ‘And if you cross my family, well, you’d better pray.’ Cue explosions, car chases, guns, and general scenes of destruction.
‘We shake the right hands, break the wrong ones,’ Conrad/Brosnan continues. ‘We don’t ask, we take. And when someone forgets their place, I’ve got a man for that.’ He’s talking about Harry, his right-hand man who seems to clean up a lot of messes for the Harrigans.
‘My wife’s the brains behind the charm,’ Conrad says by way of introduction to Maeve, who always seems to have a glass of something strong in her hand. ‘She holds me together. That makes her the most dangerous of all.’
‘The second you lose trust in me is the second this family turns to dust,’ Maeve says. Ominous.
The duo is joined by their eldest son Brendan (Daniel Betts), daughter Seraphina (Mandeep Dhillon) and son Kevin (Paddy Considine), whose own son Eddie (Anson Boon) is a bit rebellious. Meanwhile Harry’s wife Jan (Joanna Froggatt) also seems to play a key role, as well as his close associate Zosia (Jasmine Jobson).
Of course the Harrigans will have dealings with a variety of shady people in MobLand. We don’t know exactly what will go down, but it seems Harry’s adversary Donnie (Alex Fine) will play a part, as will Richie (Geoff Bell), the leader of an up-and-coming South London gang.
