Tired of intense daily styling? Then the kicked bob could be your next haircut.

Bored of ultra-polished locks? If it’s time for a change – and a little more time in the morning not worrying about expertly styling your hair – then make sure not to miss out on a kicked bob moment.

What Is A Kicked Bob?

A more low maintenance rendition of the classic short hairstyle, a kicked bob embraces the natural movement of the hair – with the ends of the hair naturally flicked (or ‘kicked’) outwards. ‘It’s pretty much the opposite of the classic, sleek bob,’ adds Issy Warren, a stylist at Hershesons. ‘Think more of an effortless, cool girl cut, rather than a precise, sharp bob.

‘The “kick” at the ends of the cut gives it more versatility,’ she adds. ‘It allows you to have more texture and flicks, usually just by rough drying.’

It’s this ‘low effort, big results’ approach that is making the kicked bob an online hit this season. ‘People with this cut can style it in just a few minutes,’ notes Izzy. ‘It’s designed to be slightly more edgy, with not as much emphasis on perfection. It makes it easier to just get up and go.’

Who Suits This Cut?

While the kicked bob can be tweaked to suit, Izzy notes that it’s an especially appealing cut if you have fine hair. ‘Any texture will work – but the cut will work really well for someone with finer hair who wants more texture,’ says the stylist. ‘A kicked bob will enhance any natural texture and move away from a perfect blunt bob, which could feel and look a bit flat on some people.’

How To Ask For A Kicked Bob In The Salon

In the salon, Izzy advises asking for a bob style, ‘but mention you want to have more of a chunkier, textured finish.’ If in doubt, bring some photo references to your appointment for your stylist to look over.

How To Style A Kicked Bob

As mentioned, this is a very low maintenance cut – with little styling required. ‘A good rough dry is key,’ Izzy recommends. ‘You can just pull the ends out with your fingers to create that kick. But if you want more of a polished look, you can use straighteners or the clamp of a tong to enhance that kick in a “cleaner” way.’

What Next?

Expect plenty more kicked bob in the future, says Izzy. ‘I don’t see this trend going away anytime soon,’ she says. ‘But the way it’s styled could become more tousled. We might see more relaxed, effortless versions of hairstyles generally, too, rather than polished looks.’
