What Is A Hook Bob?

‘A hook bob is the chic older sister of the cup bob – it’s more defined, more dramatic,’ explains Andrew Heasman, International Creative Director at RUSH Hair. ‘The hook bob is a super-precise chin-length bob which completely curves in at the ends, almost mimicking the shape of a hook. This exaggerated cut is a new approach to styling what is quite a simple cut.’

It’s this approach to styling that Andrew tells us makes the hairstyle stand out. ‘It’s left slightly longer when it comes to cutting the shape to achieve that “hooked” appearance,’ he says. ‘The look draws attention to the face’s focal points – almost directly pointing upwards to accentuate and cup the jawline. It’s the perfect balance between edge and femininity – being both polished and trendy simultaneously.

‘It’s arched, nearly sculptural look is versatile for a variety of different face shapes, hair types and textures,’ he adds. On Andrew’s mood board sits actress Florence Pugh, who he notes, ‘has been seen rocking the hook bob, channelling the gorgeous Elvira Hancock from Scarface at a recent premier. Pugh has a round face shape which is complimented by the structure of the bob – in comparison to a typical chin-length bob which can sometimes make the face look rounder, the hook book is shoulder-length, sculpting and slimming the face.’

Who Suits This Cut?

‘This bob particularly suits those with straighter hair, as the sleek, smoothness of the hair helps to emphasise the definition of the hooked ends,’ Andrew tells us. ‘Those with a diamond face shape also shine with the hook bob as the rounded silhouette highlights the face’s strong symmetry and softens the jawline.’

How To Ask For A Hook Bob In The Salon

In the salon, Andrew recommends asking for a shoulder-grazing lob – ‘this is so you can achieve that perfect hooked edge inwards’ – and bringing some inspiration pictures that show off the hook bob’s signature styling. ‘This will guarantee that you and your stylist are on the same page for your end goal,’ he says. ‘The styling is the most important part of this look, so you’ll want to emphasise curling the ends of the hair inwards to achieve that dramatic upward turn.’

How To Style It

And despite its sleekness, the hook bob seems to be a fairly low-maintenance hairstyle. ‘It requires minimal styling to look effortlessly chic,’ confirms Andrew. ‘Before styling, be sure to lightly spritz the hair with a heat protectant to ensure the hair is protected from any damage, the use a pair of straighteners to pull the ends of the hair through to accentuate the hook shape. Finish with a light-hold hairspray to ensure that your style stays in place all day.’
