Richard Hopton’s most recent book was a novel, his first, The Straits of Treachery, published by Allison & Busby in April 2020. It won the Society of Army Historical Research’s Prize for Fiction 2020. He has also written three works of non-fiction, the latest being A Reluctant Hero, the biography of Captain Robert Ryder VC, WW2 naval hero, polar explorer, pioneering yachtsman, and MP. He is now working on a sequel to the novel under the title The Restless Harbour.
He is now the Books Editor of Country & Town House, a post he has held since 2017. Prior to that, from the magazine’s inception he wrote monthly pieces profiling prominent individuals in the British luxury goods industry. His book reviews and other journalism have appeared in The Economist, FT, Country Life, The Field, and The Critic magazine amongst other publications. He is also available for copywriting assignments.
