Dame Agatha Christie’s Former Home is Up For Sale

Once home to one of Britain’s most celebrated novelists, Winterbrook in Oxfordshire is an elegant Queen Anne house boasting approximately five acres of gardens and River Thames frontage. 

Procured by Dame Agatha Christie and her archaeologist husband in 1934, the Grade II listed property is believed to date back to the 17th century, with a blue plaque now honouring the house’s former famous resident. According to estate agent Savills, whom the property is on the market with, the writer “is believed to have written many of her most famous novels in the house”.

The property is “a genuine opportunity for someone to own a piece of literary history”, says Stephen Christie-Miller, head of residential sales at Savills Henley. In fact, Winterbrook is purportedly the house in which Miss Marple’s Danemead was based on, he explains.

An impressive five-bedroom house located on the edge of Wallingford (and just 12 miles from picturesque Henley-On-Thames), Winterbrook enjoys three floors of light and spacious, high-ceilinged rooms, each brimming with character and featuring an array of period features.

Highlights include a series of decorous working fireplaces, a walk-in larder and four-oven Aga in the sizeable kitchen – not forgetting the one-bedroom cottage, which can be accessed externally as well as via the main house.

Gregor Kleinknecht, who currently resides at the property, said “it’s been a privilege to live somewhere that has such a special place in the hearts of so many,” adding that “most importantly, it has been a wonderful family home. It has been a very happy place for Agatha Christie and so it has been for our family,  and we will of course be sad to leave.”
