The esteemed Eaton Place isn’t just a picture-perfect street, but one of the most coveted addresses in the capital – especially since Winston Churchill’s daughter happened to live there. Take a look inside the Belgravia home once owned by the Churchill family.

Inside A £4.3M Belgravia Home Owned By Winston Churchill’s Daughter

From Mayfair to Kensington, more than a handful of London properties boast fascinating connections to Winston Churchill. The latest home to hit the market, however? This handsome duplex apartment in Belgravia, which was purchased by the Churchill family in the early 1960s. Winston Churchill’s youngest daughter, Lady Mary Soames, lived there with her husband Christopher while he served as Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food under then-Prime Minister Alec Douglas-Home.

While Sir Christopher eventually lost his seat in Parliament, he was subsequently appointed as UK Ambassador to France in 1968; the Belgravia apartment continued to serve as the couple’s London base until the following year, when they relocated to Paris. (There, they lived in the official ambassadorial residence, Hôtel de Charost – a breathtaking mansion which was originally home to a senior courtier of King Louis XV, before being inhabited by the sister of Napoleon Bonaparte.)

While Lady Soames dedicated much of her life to her husband’s diplomatic duties, she first worked for the Red Cross and the Women’s Voluntary Service before rising to the rank of Junior Command in the Auxiliary Territorial Service (the women’s branch of the British Army during World War II). She also accompanied Winston Churchill himself on several of his overseas journeys, and was awarded an MBE in 1945.

The impressive Belgravia apartment remained in the Churchill family until 1973, and it’s now back on the market for £4.3 million. Perched on the third and fourth floors of an end-of-terrace townhouse on Eaton Place, it’s complete with three bedrooms, two reception rooms and an enormous roof terrace.

From the entrance hall, you can explore the double-aspect living room and separate dining room, both of which offer views onto Upper Belgrave Street towards Belgrave Square and Eaton Square. The lower floor also contains a spacious kitchen, a handy utility room and a powder room.

Upstairs, meanwhile, you’ll find two guest bedrooms, a family bathroom and the gorgeous principal suite, which encompasses a dressing room and a large bathroom kitted out with a bath and a walk-in shower. It also leads onto the sprawling private roof terrace – the crowning jewel of this rather showstopping home.
