Look Inside… A Converted Pub In Shoreditch

Dining room with wooden floors and fireplace

Believed to date back to the 1800s, this three-bedroom home on Shoreditch’s Vallance Road boasts a fascinating story. It was formerly occupied by English social worker Mary Hughes, who lived and worked there between 1926 and 1941. She transformed the building into an educational centre, and it even bears a blue plaque in her honour.

The site was more recently used as a pub, but it’s since been converted back into a residential space and now serves as a fabulous East London home. Arranged over four floors, it offers two reception rooms, a family bathroom and three bedrooms – one of which is currently used as a gym.

You’ll find the spacious main reception room and one of the bedrooms on the ground floor, with a utility room and second bedroom (or gym) on the level below. The kitchen and dining room are located on the first floor, along with a handy study complete with its own terrace.

The upper level of the property is occupied by the primary bedroom and bathroom – plus another lovely terrace. The final touch is a stunning rooftop area providing a superb spot for al fresco dining (and some incredible views across London, of course).

Nick Verdi, head of the Savills Shoreditch office, notes that the property ‘offers a style of living that would be ideal for someone wanting to pursue their passions from home – whether that’s art, music, photography or textiles – given the excellent studio space available.’ It’s also ideally located, standing just minutes away from Whitechapel and Bethnal Green tube stations.
