The height of luxury in the Big Apple
When it comes to enviable addresses, you can’t get much better than Fifth Avenue – and this East Manhattan penthouse is more than worthy of its knockout location.
Inside A $25M Penthouse In The Sohmer Piano Building, Manhattan
From Studio 54 hangouts to Wall Street landmarks and glittering new developments, there isn’t exactly a shortage of jaw-dropping real estate in New York. The latest super prime listing is just as impressive: picture a five-bedroom, five-bathroom penthouse on Fifth Avenue, East Manhattan, crowned by a huge golden cupola. Sound spectacular? Welcome to the Sohmer Piano Building – a building which happens to be nicknamed ‘the Renaissance rocket ship’.
Designed in 1897, the Sohmer Piano Building was initially used commercially by architects, publishers and (predictably) Sohmer & Co., one of the first manufacturers of the baby grand piano. With its towering columns and octagonal gold dome, it’s one of New York’s most iconic buildings – and, since the early 2000s (when it was converted to luxury condos), it’s been home to some of the city’s wealthiest residents.
The penthouse itself boasts nearly 6,000 square feet of space across the building’s 12th and 13th floors, with four dazzling reception spaces and five sprawling bedrooms. The centrepiece (aside from the golden cupola, of course) is a circular limestone staircase that leads from the main foyer to the upper level.
On the lower level, you’ll find three guest bedrooms and two bathrooms alongside the magnificent principal suite, which contains an enormous dressing room and a spa-style bathroom. Upstairs, there’s a sleek kitchen/breakfast room, a separate formal dining room, two further bathrooms, and a gym – not to mention a huge living room leading directly into the roof dome (which currently serves as a rather breathtaking reception area, since it happens to command 360-degree views of New York).
As if all of this wasn’t enough, the penthouse is also complete with a private roof deck, providing yet another spot from which to marvel at the city skyline. It seems $25 million can get you pretty far in the Big Apple…
