1923 Is Back – But Will There Be A Third Season?

Yellowstone may have drawn to an explosive conclusion at the end of 2024, but Taylor Sheridan’s exploration of this ranch universe is far from over
Taylor Sheridan’s strike-delayed, much-anticipated second season of historical western drama 1923 finally premiered last night. Led by Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren as married ranchers Jacob and Cara Dutton, it’s been two years since season 1 left us on a huge cliffhanger, with Alexandra (Julia Schlaepfer) London-bound and Whitfield (Timothy Dalton) threatening to claim the Dutton ranch for himself. Season 2 is set to deliver all of the answers we crave. But after that, can we expect 1923 season 3?
Will There Be 1923 Season 3?
No, 1923 season 3 is not on the cards, with the second season previously announced as the finale. In fact, series creator Sheridan always envisioned the series as two eight-episode blocks – aka two seasons.
Ironically, the whole series – which is a prequel to Yellowstone but a sequel to 1883 – came about when Paramount bosses realised (spoilers) most of the characters perished at the end of 1883. ‘When they read the last episode of 1883, I don’t think they digested what had just happened, even though I made it quite clear from the very beginning,’ Sheridan told Deadline in 2022. ‘The story I heard is Bob Bakish watched it and said, “wait a minute, she dies! They all die? What do we do in season two?” I said, there is no season two. They’re like, “there better be a fu*king season two because we already picked it up”. I’m sitting here going, “guys, everyone is dead”.’
One of Paramount’s most-watched series ever, 1923 is also one of the company’s most expensive productions. ‘I would argue that 1883 was the most expensive first season of a TV show ever made,’ Sheridan says. ‘This was much more expensive. Much more expensive. I don’t know what the Game of Thrones budgets were, but I don’t know how they could have been more than this.’

1923 Season 2 Episode Release Schedule
New episodes of 1923 season 2 arrive on Paramount+ weekly on Sundays. The season will be made up of eight episodes, with the finale landing on 13 April 2025. The season 2 release schedule is as follows:

What Next?
So what’s next for the Yellowstone universe? Reportedly, a 1923 sequel is on the cards entitled 1944, exploring the trials and tribulations of the Dutton family in, you guessed it, 1944. While 1923 explores the WWI fallout alongside the Great Depression and the Spanish Influenza, 1944 will similarly be very historically rooted, this time in WWII.
Meanwhile, in the present day, three more Yellowstone spin-offs seem to be in the works: The Madison, 6666 and an untitled Beth and Rip series taking place after the events of the Yellowstone finale. The latter was teased in place of a sixth season of Yellowstone after strikes and the controversial departure of Kevin Costner unravelled things. That said, 6666 – another present-day series, this time set on Texas’ Four Sixes Ranch – has been in the works even longer (since February 2021), though no news on casting or filming.
The furthest along its production journey of all four planned spin-offs, however, is The Madison, which was filmed from October to December 2024 – meaning we will hopefully see it on our screens before the end of 2025. Here’s everything we know so far.
