Come on in!
From stellar reality TV to original dramas, ITV always has our back. As we move further into the era of streaming, many shows land on the channel’s streaming site, ITVX (previously known as ITV Hub), before they even air. If you’re looking for something new to watch and subscription sites are letting you down, these are the best shows on ITVX to add to your watchlist.
Best Shows To Watch On ITVX Right Now
Grantchester
The eighth season of Grantchester will premiere on ITV1 at 9pm on Thursday 11 January – so it’s time to catch up on everything you’ve missed. It’s one of the best shows on ITVX for cosy crime lovers, so if Richard Osman’s The Thursday Murder Club was your cup of tea, Grantchester is sure to be, too. Set in a sleepy Cambridgeshire village in the 1950s, it follows Anglican vicar and former Scots Guards officer Sidney Chambers (James Norton), who forges an unlikely partnership with the overworked Detective Inspector Geordie Keating (Robson Green) to solve the crimes wracking the village. The series was taken over by Tom Brittney as Reverend William “Will” Davenport from series four, and series eight will be his last series before Rishi Nair as Vicar Alphy Kotteram takes the lead.
Platform 7
Led by Top Boy’s Jasmine Jobson, this brand new psychological thriller is a limited series of only four episodes – but you’ll be gripped throughout each one. After witnessing a cataclysmic event on the seventh platform of a railway station, protagonist Lisa (Jobson) finds her own fragmented memory jogged, joining the dots between her own life and the event she just witnessed. Intriguing… Based on Louise Doughty’s best-selling novel of the same name, it’ll air on ITV1 in the near future, but every episode is available to stream now on ITVX if you can’t wait that long.
Everything We Know So Far About Platform 7
Archie
Before Cary Grant became a Hollywood star, he was an impoverished Bristol boy named Archie. His rise to fame is chronicled in this new ITV drama, which is available to stream now on ITVX. Jason Isaacs stars in the lead role, supported by Kara Tointon, Harriet Walter, Ellie MacDowell and more, and the series takes an unflinching look at Cary Grant’s personal struggles despite his glittering life and international stardom.
Sanditon
Looking for a period drama? Sanditon is one of the best shows on ITVX to fit the bill. Adapted by Andrew Davies from an unfinished manuscript by Jane Austen, the series follows Charlotte Heywood, a classically spirited and impulsive Austen protagonist who moves from her rural town to up-and-coming beach resort Sanditon on a whim. With a storyline packed with romance and intrigue, the series has garnered loyal fans from across the globe – stream on ITVX to join them.
Payback
We love a crime box set as much as the next person, and ITV gladly satiates our desire. A recent pick is Payback, a six-part drama following Lexie Noble (Morven Christie) who, upon her husband’s sudden death, becomes entangled in a perilous police operation to tackle a notorious crime lord. Click here to read our interview with Morven to learn more about the series before you tune in.
Three Little Birds
Lenny Henry’s heartfelt Windrush drama generated plenty of well-deserved buzz earlier this year, and you can stream every episode on ITVX if you missed it on TV. A celebration of immigration and community, set in the post-Windrush 1950s, the series is led by Rochelle Neil and Saffron Coomber playing sisters Leah and Chantrelle who emigrate to England searching for a new wife, plus Yazmin Belo as a young pious Christian who they have chosen as a potential bride for their brother Aston (Javone Prince). Click here to read our interview with Rochelle to learn more about the series before you tune in.
An Audience With Kylie
Following on from Adele’s ‘And Audience With’ in November 2021, pop icon Kylie Minogue returned to the Royal Albert Hall on 1 December for an intimate performance of her greatest hits – including recent chart toppers like ‘Padam Padam’ – to an audience of superfans and VIP guests. Stream for incredible entertainment, plus questions for the pop icon from famous faces.
Love & Death
For a crime drama with a dollop of truth to it, tune into Love & Death, an import from HBO Max which can be streamed on ITVX. Transporting us to a quiet – and pious – Texas neighbourhood in 1980, the biographical series traces the events leading up to Candy Montgomery (Elizabeth Olsen)’s axe murder of her neighbour and friend Betty Gore (Lily Rabe). It has an ensemble cast – with Jesse Plemons and Patrick Figut playing each woman’s husband – which aptly creates an unsettling, quietly addictive mood.
The Long Shadow
For a British biographical drama, tune into The Long Shadow, ITV’s new Yorkshire Ripper drama centring on the hunt for the notorious murderer. The series is mainly based on Michael Bilton’s 2003 book Wicked Beyond Belief, focusing on the police investigation rather than the murders, exploring the impact on Sutcliff’s victims and their families, as well as the toll on the officers at the heart of the investigation. With an ensemble cast – including Toby Jones, David Morrissey, Daniel Mays, Lee Ingleby and Katherine Kelly – it makes for a very unsettling watch. Click here to read our interview with Katherine to learn more about the series before you stream it.
Mamma Mia! I Have A Dream
Do you remember the BBC’s 2008 talent series, I’d Do Anything? Overseen by Andrew Lloyd Webber, it saw women from across the UK competing to win the honour of playing Nancy in the West End revival of Oliver! – including a young Jessie Buckley. It was followed by Over The Rainbow seeking someone to play Dorothy and Superstar hunting a lead for Jesus Christ Superstar, but nothing has made a splash like it since – that is until ITV’s latest addition to the genre, Mamma Mia! I Have A Dream. The clue is in the name: the mission of this series was to find two stars for the West End musical, Mamma Mia!. Transporting the format to ITV (and to Greece!), and adding in a dose of challenges and masterclasses, the result is a thrilling whimsical ride, with Jessie Ware, Amber Riley, Samantha Barks and Alan Carr forming the perfect, witty judging panel.
Broadchurch
One of ITV’s most famous series of late is Broadchurch, which ran for three series from 2013–2017 with David Tennant and Oliver Colman in lead roles as DI Alec Hardy and DS Ellie Miller. Created by Chris Chibnall, Broadchurch is a small, close-knit town in Dorset which is shaken when a young boy named Danny Price is murdered.
Malpractice
If you’re a fan of medical dramas, Malpractice is one of the best shows on ITVX to scratch the itch. Led by Niamh Algar, who plays Dr Lucinda Edwards, it’s a tense look at an NHS A&E ward, what happens when things go wrong, and how those wrong doings are exacerbated or created by the inherently stressful environment. It’s not a relaxing watch by any means – but it’s a great thriller if you’re after something a little different. Click here to read our interview with Niamh to hear more about the series before you watch.
Marcella
Known for being intensely dark and the protagonist’s complex personal life, Marcella is a British crime series starring Anna Friel in the titular role. She’s a former London detective who returns to work to investigate an open case from 11 years earlier: a serial killer of children. Along the way, she encounters various suspects and personal challenges, from her estranged husband’s new engagement to worrying black outs.
The Confessions of Frannie Langton
When ITV Hub became ITVX, it marked the beginning of a new generation of original dramas created for streaming. One of the first was The Confessions of Frannie Langton, a Georgian drama following Frannie (Karla-Simone Spence) who, born into a life of slavery, moves from a Jamaican plantation to a Mayfair household to work for celebrated scientist George Benham (Stephen Campbell Moore) and his wife, Madame Marguerite Benham (Sophie Cookson). The show begins with Frannie being accused of the couple’s murder – especially because she is being accused of killing the woman she loves, her mistress Madame. Click here to read our interview with Karla-Simone for the inside scoop on the series.
The Tower
Based on Kate London’s Metropolitan trilogy of novels, The Tower is one of the best shows on ITVX if you’re a fan of police dramas, centering on Detective Sergeant Sarah Collins (Gemma Whelan) who investigates the deaths of a long-serving police officer and a 15 year old Libyan refugee, who fell together from the roof of a tower block in south east London. Emmett J. Scanlan, Tahirah Sharif, Jimmy Akingbola and Niamh Cusack all star in this tense, double pronged drama.
Without Sin
Plot twist fans should stream Without Sin on ITVX, an original four-part drama which debuted on the site in December 2022 before airing on ITV1 in May 2023. Vicky McClure takes the lead, playing Stella, an Uber driver who, three years after her daughter’s death, receives a message from the man who killed her child.
Karen Pirie
Famed crime fiction writer Val McDermid’s Karen Pirie is perfect for the small screen, following a young and fearless Scottish investigator, Detective Sergeant Karen Pirie, who is in charge of reopening a cold case for the murder of a barmaid. It’s one of the best shows on ITVX, with Lauren Lyle in the titular role (she sat down with C&TH to talk all about it here), creating a unique series in an oversaturated crime drama scene: this is the first crime drama about a young, underestimated female detective in her 20s.
