Here's what you need to know

It’s back: series 3 of Jack Rooke’s beloved Channel 4 comedy kicked off with a double bill last night. But will there be a Big Boys series 4?

Will There Be Big Boys Series 4?

No, Channel 4 has confirmed Big Boys will not be returning for series 4. The news came in January 2025, when the series 3 trailer dropped.

Starring Dylan Llewellyn, Jon Pointing, Camille Coduri, Katy Wix, Izuka Hoyle, the heartwarming comedy chronicles the unlikely friendship between sweet and shy, recently out Jack (Llewellyn) and laddish ever-so-slightly mature student Danny (Pointing) at Brent Uni.

‘Ten years ago I took a rather ramshackle comedy-theatre hour about grief and friendship to a damp cave at the Edinburgh Fringe and never thought a decade later it’d be a silly, sweet little sitcom about a lad’s lad and a dweeby gay becoming best mates,’ series creator Jack Rooke said on the series 3 renewal. ‘My therapist (a close lesbian friend) suggested that Big Boys is subconsciously about me not being able to say a proper goodbye to certain people or periods of my life, and so to give this show a final send-off is a huge honour. I’ve known the ending since the pilot, and I hope it still represents those first Edinburgh shows, but also the collaborative genius of our incredible cast, crew and creative team. I’ll be indebted to them always for giving me the funniest, happiest years making Big Boys 1-3. Thank you!’

What Will Happen In Big Boys Series 3?

Big Boys series 3 plummets us in the gang’s final year at Brent Uni, with aloof the dissertations, deadlines and dating that entails. ‘Peggy and Shannon embark on new romances and never-ending nappy changes, whilst Jack and Danny’s friendship is tested to its limits as they realise proper adult life is coming,’ Channel 4 teases. ‘Will the boys still choose each other like before, or will this be the end of the road?’

Is Big Boys Based On A True Story?

Big Boys is loosely based on creator Jack Rooke’s own experiences at university, which he first translated into comedy with his live shows Good Grief, Happy Hour and Love Letters.

‘It’s been 10 years since I actually graduated Uni and now yet again I’m returning to my campus with a clapperboard and film crew to recreate the embarrassing endeavours of my youth,’ Rooke said on Big Boys’ series 3 renewal. ‘It is just a dream job! The response to series 2 has been beautiful and we’re so grateful this show continues to connect with and get discovered by so many weird and wonderful viewers. Big Boys is the closest I’ll ever feel to being in a girl band and we’re all desperate to come back like a pack of rabid dogs and put on a sexy, cringey, big funny show for you all!’

When asked how much of Big Boys is based on reality, Rooke replied ‘about fifty-fifty’, begrudgingly adding that ‘the most embarrassing moments from the show are the real bits’. Even when moments are fiction, Rooke wanted Big Boys to be true to life, striving to make the series ‘as British as possible, to celebrate the queer haven London can be for people’.

Likewise, the grief at the loss of his father Jack faces throughout Big Boys is based on Rooke’s own experiences with loss: like Jack in Big Boys, Rooke’s father Laurie died when he was 15 years old, and the comedy is a snapshot of that period of his life. ‘Some people might think I’ve overdone it, but grief is the thing that has shaped my identity more than anything else in my life,’ the comedian and writer told the Standard.

Where Is Big Boys Filmed?

While Rooke attended the University of Westminster in Harrow, in Big Boys, Jack studies journalism at the fictional Brent University. However, the series was actually filmed at Rooke’s former campus – University of Westminster, Harrow – just down the road from where he grew up in Watford. As well as the campus, Big Boys was filmed in Watford, Mill End, Harrow and Stanmore, with Rooke describing the series 1 finale in particular as a ‘bit of a love letter to Watford‘.
