Here's everything we know so far about Celine Song's follow up to Past Lives (2023)
Celine Song’s directorial feature debut, Past Lives, packed a punch. A delicate, atmospheric painting of two lives that intersect, diverge then merge again, the romantic drama premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival before going on to earn two Oscar nominations, five Golden Globe nominations, and acclaim from the likes of the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute. We’ve been waiting with bated breath for Song’s follow-up ever since, so we’re pleased to finally see a trailer for Materialists, set to launch this summer. Another collaboration with A24, here’s what you need to know.
Celine Song’s Materialists: Plot, Cast, Release Date & More
What Is Materialists About?
Materialists is a rom-com centring on ambitious New York City matchmaker Lucy (Dakota Johnson) who commands a high price for her services among the City’s elite singletons. At a client’s wedding, she meets Randy (Pedro Pascal), a charismatic millionaire who also happens to be one of the groom’s best men. He can only be described as a unicorn, ‘an impossible fantasy’: wealthy and attractive, but also funny, caring, empathetic.
But at the same wedding, Lucy bumps into her ex, John (Chris Evans): a struggling actor working as a waiter, who Lucy dumped but never really moved on from. What ensues is a love triangle, with Lucy’s attention torn between comfortable, familiar love and a breathtaking fantasy.
