The rumour mill has whipped up a new production – but this time it holds water
What’s your favourite rom com? The ‘90s has a hold on our heartstrings, and Clueless stands out from the pack. Starring Alicia Silverstone as spoiled but warmhearted shopaholic Cher Horowitz, the 1995 comedy is loosely based on Jane Austen’s Emma (1815) and shot romantic lead Paul Rudd to fame. It’s a cult classic, spawning a spin off TV series in 1996 (in which Silverstone was replaced by Rachel Blanchard), a comic book series and even a collection of late-’90s novels. Here in the UK, a stage adaptation of Clueless recently launched on the West End, featuring music by KT Tunstall, though the reception has been mixed. Either way, we’re pleased to see more Clueless news: a sequel TV series is reportedly in the works, with Silverstone herself set to star. Here’s everything we know so far.
Clueless Sequel Series: Plot, Cast, Release Date & More
We’re totally buggin’: It seems Paramount is bringing Cher Horowitz back to our screens, with Alicia Silverstone set to reprise her role 30 years after it premiered in cinemas. The star has also signed on as an executive producer, with a sequel TV series reportedly in the works at streaming platform Peacock.
Silverstone will be joined by writers and producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, who previously collaborated on Gossip Girl and The O.C.. Both are also currently working on the Legally Blonde prequel, Elle. Clueless’s original writer and director Amy Heckerling is also set to executive produce the series, with Freakier Friday’s writer Jordan Weiss also signing on.

What Will Happen?
No news just yet on the plot of the Clueless TV series, but we know Silverstone will reprise her role as Cher Horowitz – now presumably in her late 40s. According to Variety, the series ‘will serve as a follow-up to the cult classic film’.
In 2020, a sequel series was rumoured, which attempted to spin the sun-soaked valley rom com into a mystery, with best friend Dionne on the hunt for Cher after she goes missing. Since production on that project stalled, it’s probably safe to assume the general plot wasn’t approved of, and reports state the projects are totally separate.
Perhaps more likely is an exploration of Cher’s life as a mother, or a 40-something socialite in Los Angeles. Either way, we might meet a mini Cher, and her antics could take over the series.
The original film centres on Cher, a pampered and social teenager in ‘90s LA who loves matchmaking and makeovers.
Who Will Star?
Other than Alicia Silverstone, there’s no news just yet on who might star in the Clueless sequel. We’d love to see the return of Stacey Dash as Dionne, with the two showcasing the LA social scene 30 years on from the film, whether aunts or mothers to the new kids ruling Bronson Alcott High. With Dash attached to that rumoured 2020 series, we think there’s a strong chance she’ll sign on to this new project, too.
The most heart-warming possibility? If Paul Rudd were to reprise his role as love interest Josh Lucas. Could the duo have stayed together all this time? Could they be raising teens of their own? We can dream…
Release Date
It’s early days, and there’s no news just yet on when we might get to see the Clueless sequel TV series. We anticipate we won’t see it before the end of 2026. Check back here for details as they emerge.
